Research Associate

We are looking for a Research Associate to join the Division of Cancer at the Imperial College, Hammersmith Campus (Dr Robert Kypta) and the Department of Materials at the South Kensington Campus (Professor Alexandra Porter and Dr Fang Xie). The post is funded by Prostate Cancer UK.


The purpose of the post is to develop, test and compare the activities of nanoparticles targeting a cell-surface protein with demonstrated roles in prostate cancer. An integrated chemotherapeutic platform will be engineered comprising zinc oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in a mesoporous, silica surface coating, with a star-shaped gold nanoparticle core and surface-conjugated antibodies to target cancer cells and deliver therapeutic chemicals.


Duties and responsibilities

You will take initiative in the planning of research, plan and conduct scientific work appropriate supervision and conduct data analysis. You will provide guidance to staff and students, attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary.


In this role you will be responsible for providing guidance and support to PhD, MRes and BSc students, as well as maintain highly organised and accurate record of experimental work. You will actively participate in the research programme of the group involved.


Essential requirements


You should:



Hold a PhD in the biophysical sciences or a closely related discipline
Have a proven publication record, including at least one 1st author paper
Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures
Knowledge of nanocarrier synthesis, functionalisation and characterisation
Excellent communication, scientific writing and organisational skills
An interest in cancer research is desirable
Experience using nanotechnologies in cell-based settings is desirable

The post is full time, fixed term for 11 months in the first instance, with possibility of renewal for a further 13 months.



Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 - £39,888 per annum.
