Photonics Design Engineer

At Applied Materials, we are pioneering novel nano-photonic devices for applications in imaging, sensing, and computing. We are harnessing the power of Applied Material’s world-leading material science and nano-fabrication capabilities to enable the next generation of photonic devices.


Our photonics modeling and design team iscurrently seeking to hire a Photonics Design Engineer with a PhD or equivalent learning in photonics, optics, or physics, in addition to 5 - 10 years of successful work experience.


Key Responsibilities


Modeling, designing, prototyping and debugging novel and complex photonic devices First-principle analysis of optical and electromagnetic devices

Functional Knowledge and Experience


D eep understanding of passive or active nano-phot o nic devices D esign exploration, accurate modeling, design of experiment and characteriz ation of photonic devices in application to imaging, sensing or displays Familiarity with laser/LED device physics, diffractive optics, optical materials and nano-fabrication methods is advantageous D esign by first-principle analysis as well as detailed computational modeling and optimization

Proficient in simulation methods such as RCWA, FDTD, FEM, Fourier Optics, Ray Optics


Proficient in MATLAB, Python or C++


In addition to above, the following is highly preferred knowledge and experience:


Familiarity with laser/LED device physics, diffractive optics, polarization optics and optical materials Familiarity with micro-displays, spatial light modulators, image sensors, photodiodes Familiarity with thin film materials and nano-fabrication techniques Familiarity with design for manufacturing, tolerance analysis, and statistical performance analysis Familiarity with computational optimization and machine learning techniques
