Sr. Director, Development & Engineering

The Sr. Director of Engineering for Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) will work closely with Product Marketing, Technology Development, Application Development, Manufacturing, Service and General Managers for the Bruker Nano Surfaces and Metrology (BNSM) Division to execute our scanning probe product development roadmap to drive growth in the business. This position is part of the AFM senior management team and has an active role in development of the overall multi-year strategy and product roadmap.




Specifically, the successful candidate will lead a department that includes software, hardware and test engineering along with program management. The engineering team is ultimately responsible for all product development and sustaining engineering efforts for AFMi, nanoIR and AAFM products. Direct reports include department managers, project managers and individual contributors. A hands-on management and leadership style is required to manage the team for peak performance and to provide a smooth transition of products from technology proof-of-concept through product development to manufacturing and customer support and then to our customers. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to develop and identify optimal organization and management functions to facilitate group growth and institute new process as required. The candidate will also have experience with managing external engineering partners. This position requires strong leadership, in-depth technical knowledge, prior experience and direct management of most of the following disciplines: system architecture, software development, electronics, mechanical and optical engineering.



The Senior Director of Engineering, AFM, will join a team of high-performance managers in the AFM business units during a critical phase in the growth of the organization. The candidate must have demonstrated the ability to set and meet high expectations for the engineering team. The environment is fast paced and dynamic and the Senior Director of Engineering will have their team positioned for disciplined and efficient response to our customer and market needs and changing competitive landscape, while maintaining our core product development strategy.


Qualifications:

Core Functions


Develop and manage product roadmaps for 3 AFM business units, building internal consensus and incorporating feedback from within the organization and external to the organization. Manage the team to deliver product solutions that meet the defined market requirements and gross margin targets, are easy to produce and have high reliability. Level and plan resources (incl. budget, headcount, partners) in a fast pace and dynamic environment to optimize product and technology development. Cultivate a milestone-driven culture of accountability, in which consistent innovation, quality and progress are expected. Assess and critique all aspects of design concepts to achieve performance and manufacturability. Provide inspirational leadership, motivation and hands-on direction to all engineering staff and project managers. Participate with the rest of the AFM management team in refining the business strategy during the annual strategy process. Lead both as the executive in charge of engineering but also as a business oriented executive focused on business growth and improved financial performance. Coordinate stakeholders in the prosecution and maintenance of the AFM intellectual property portfolio.

Provide active performance management for the team including career development, managing objectives of individuals, and career development plans. Actively works with human resources to recruit and attract top talent.

Simultaneously manage multiple internal and external initiatives/projects and deliver outstanding results. Plans, develops, and establishes engineering policies, procedures in accordance with BU objectives. Provide strong process management. Critical thinking and problem solving through leadership and hands-on management. Process and data driven with a pragmatic approach to getting the job and delivering high quality as first priority.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Exceptional leadership, management and communication skills. Outsourced development maturity-ability to move team to outsourcing paradigm Ability to work collaboratively with employees and executives at all levels of the corporation and establish and maintain strong relationships internally and externally. Demonstrated experience and skills in formalized project management, resource estimation, budgeting, resource leveling, and business aligned prioritization. Hands-on and management experience in product development including the software, electronics, mechanical, optics and systems architecture disciplines. Prefer individual with very strong experience in the use and development of surface metrology and characterization systems and associated applications in industrial in-line uses. Demonstrated leadership experience in design for manufacturability and serviceability, FMEA and can coach and develop team in the formal uses of it. Lead and negotiate win-win solutions to any technical, organizational or customer challenge. Hold team and themselves accountable, demonstrate enthusiasm and can-do attitude, to develop excitement and the desire to work to a very high standard. Thinks quickly on their feet, is practical and “street smart” – and wants to win. Experienced with customer interaction and development of commercial products in moderate volumes and to leverage prior common platforms and designs. Less than 5% domestic and international travel may be required.


Educational and Experience Requirements


A BS with a Master's or Ph.D. degree preferred in one or more core engineering disciplines or in applied sciences such as physics, optics, material science or physical chemistry. A BS with additional or direct experience can substitute for a higher degree. Experience of 15+ years of management of product development of an organization of at least 20+ members.
