The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is currently seeking a Research Specialist I to join our team of professionals.
Duties Include:
Develops, designs, and conducts one or more small or moderately complex research projects based on the funded projects scope and future grant submission needs. Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques. Revises Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol drafts prior to submission and advises on methodology. In conjunction with the PI, amends and renews the IACUC protocols. Co-Authors publications and may co-present results with PI at meetings and/or conferences. Develops and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to animal research and animal husbandry that are pertinent to the department of Immunology and Nano-Medicine. Assists department in appropriate animal husbandry procedures. Provides training independently to technical staff, students, and investigators on the proper handling of research animals and experimental procedures. Responsible for maintaining log books and animals counts. Responsible for breeding, colony maintenance, tail clipping, genomic DNA extraction and genotyping by PCR. Under the PI's supervision, administers animal minor procedures such as intravenous injection, subcutaneous injection, Intraperitoneal injection, and complex experimental procedures such as anesthesia, animals¿ post-HIV infection husbandry, medications, treatments and collects biological samples. Ensures bio hazardous and toxic waste is disposed in accordance with environmental safety rules and regulations. Places orders related with animal experiments, receives and stores materials and supplies, as well as maintains work records. Interacts with investigators regarding husbandry and health of the animals under their care. Contacts the attending veterinarian to report sick animals. Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator. Performs related duties as required or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of experience or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in zoology.
Must have prior experience in animal experimentation working with rodents and non-human primates.
Basic knowledge of statistics and mathematics for data analysis.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
