A Day in the Life

Position Description
The Principle chemist is primarily responsible for analyzing and reporting surface chemistry testing from X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and optical microscopy techniques. Also required is authoring test plans/reports, instrument operating procedures, instrument qualifications and standard operating procedures. Other responsibilities include the documentation of findings in laboratory notebooks and compliance with all Medtronic quality procedures and practices. The role functions as part of an analytical chemistry team that works under ISO17025 and ISO 13485 Quality Management Systems in the medical device field.



Position Responsibilities


Partner with clients to understand and define testing needs Perform sample preparation, testing, data analysis and reporting for surface analysis projects Document testing and data analysis results in an electronic lab notebook and laboratory information management system Operate and maintain surface instrumentation Author and review laboratory processes


Basic Qualifications


Bachelors in Materials Science or similar with minimum 7 years of experience Experience with XPS, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and optical microscopy Strong written and verbal communication skills Experience documenting testing in laboratory notebooks Ability prioritize and execute on daily tasks Ability to work and be effective with minimal supervision Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills that are results oriented Strong ability to understand mathematical concepts related to laboratory data interpretation Microsoft Word & Excel proficiency Must Have: Minimum Requirements Bachelors degree required Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience
Nice to Have Masters or PhD in Materials Science or similar with 5+ years of experience Hands on working use of focused ion beam (FIB), white light interferometer, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Nano-mechanical testing. Experience with regulated quality systems Experience with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software An understanding of cGMP, FDA and ISO requirements
