Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):
The successful candidate would work in the Micro and Nano Optics (MNO) research department of the Science and Technology Division. MNO combines deep understanding of display, light sources, and sensing systems with fundamental research in structured materials to develop new advantaged optical products. We seek out technicians with excellent hands-on problem solving and data analysis skills to collaborate with our scientists to execute experiments and analyze results. The ideal candidate should have experience with aligning optical systems, executing optical measurements, computer-assisted design software, and managing experimental data. Our projects are fast-paced, and we expect our technicians to have the curiosity and drive to learn new areas quickly. We constantly add to our experimental capabilities, which today include the full range of display system measurements, scattering measurements, waveguide measurements, and various linear and nonlinear spectroscopies. Our product design length scales go from tens of nanometers to tenths of millimeters - requiring the use of a wide array of measurement techniques and management of spectral and imaging data.


Day to Day Responsibilities:
Work with scientists to design, set up, and execute optical measurements.Manage the flow of samples to be measured and maintain the data for each sampleDocument experimental results in formal and informal reportsCollaborate with project team members in other departments to solve technical problems

Travel requirements (please note if international):
< 10% Domestic

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
40 hours/week, 8-5, with some flexibility

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess)
Basic knowledge of optics or electronicsHands-on experience in executing experiments or repairing/maintaining equipmentBasic knowledge of LabView, Python, or other lab automation techniquesAbility to document work and demonstrate attention to detailData analysis (Excel, Matlab/Octave, R, Python, or similar packages)
Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)
Required education: Associates degree in Applied Sciences
Required experience: 0 years beyond college

Desired education: BS in Optics, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Biology
Basic knowledge of CAD softwareKnowledge of electronics, wiring, soldering, RF amplifierKnowledge of data acquisition system, such as oscilloscope, DAC/ADCKnowledge of micro-mechanics, such as piezo-drive, stepper motor, linear motorKnowledge with precision alignment and substrate preparation, such as cleaning and handlingFamiliarity with Class 2-4 laser systems
