About the Opportunity:
The Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security of Northeastern University is seeking an enthusiastic Research Scientist in the field of chemistry/biochemistry. The primary responsibility of the candidate is to oversee, execute, and communicate research across multiple projects and interdisciplinary teams. The candidate should have a strong background in chemistry/biochemistry and be familiar with designing, fabricating, and characterizing materials over multiple spatial scales (from nano- to centi-meter). A basic understanding of materials design, engineering, and spectroscopy will be required. The candidate should have an interest in managing highly collaborative research efforts with scientists and engineers. It is expected that the candidate will also contribute to, and lead research grant/proposals and reports, write manuscripts, and provide technical oversight of junior team members. Hands-on experience in test/validation of materials using MIL-STD, ISO, and ASTM standards is a plus.
This position is located on Northeastern University’s Innovation Campus at Burlington, MA with travel to the main university campus in downtown Boston or regional campuses as needed. The position is with the Kostas Research Institute and will report to the Chief Technology Officer. Close partnership with, and support of the KRI Senior Scientists for DoD contracts is required.
Responsibilities:
Research & Development
Conduct laboratory experiments in the development of novel, functional materials by leveraging the fields of analytical and synthetic chemistry with appropriate analytical testing and characterization; this role will require the initiation, execution, and completion of research and experiments and prototype development Prepare and write grants, patents, and summary presentations Assist in the development of baseline materials science capability to include project ideation, instrumentation acquisition and developing industry contacts Engage in technical communication/discussion with both internal and external collaborators to develop and scale early stage products Document and effectively communicate research results to the business leadership and external parties as required Laboratory management; including providing technical oversight for laboratory technical staff and junior research team members
Obtain Research Funding
Write and/or contribute to research proposals and develop budgets and other technical project related materials Develop relationships, funding pipelines, and provide opportunities to further NU and KRI, LLC goals and objectives
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, materials science/engineering or related field Eligibility for National Security Clearance 2+ years’ experience with biotechnology and bioanalytical techniques; characterizing materials over multiple spatial scales (from nano- to centi-meter) Understanding of materials design, engineering, and spectroscopy Proven track record of ability to manage and prioritize assigned tasks/projects simultaneously through communication with engineers/scientists/interns to meet the overall expectations and needs of the company Strong technical expertise and demonstrated independence in the design and execution of experiments Excellent communication skills including oral presentations and written technical reports Experience representing the company at off-site locations with customers
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience executing DoD sponsored programs Experience in test/validation of materials using MIL-STD, ISO, and ASTM standards
