Research Specialist I (Mass Spectrometry) - Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine is currently seeking a Research Specialist I, with a focus on Mass Spectrometry, to join our team of professionals.


Duties Include:


Develops and conducts basic and/or complex research procedures in consultation with Translational Glycobiology Institute at Florida International University (TGIF) Principal Investigators, including glycan and glycoprotein sample preparation and glycoproteomics nanoflow liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometry (nLC-MS) analyses. Maintains chromatography and mass spectrometry instrumentation and performs rigorous routine instrument quality control. Analyzes glycomic and glycoproteomic data sets using state-of-the art software. Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes. Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data integrity. Collaborates with faculty and staff to apply rigorous methods for determining changes in protein glycosylation with a focus on cancer development and progression, and that inform the understanding of cancer biology. Co-authors publications and may co-present results with TGIF Principal Investigators at meetings and/or conferences. Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator. Works with minors and/or vulnerable persons who are research participants and/or volunteering in the laboratories. Performs related duties as required or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of experience or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.


Desired Qualifications

Background in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or a related field and ample experience with proteomics and/or glycoproteomics.


Familiarity with nanoflow liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometry (nLC-MS/MS) and multiple fragmentation methods (CID, HCD, ETD) and knowledge of instrument features outlined below is recommended.
