Senior Director, Data Technology Engineering Business Engagement - Chemistry Research

Job Description


The role of Business Engagement leader for San Diego site and Chemistry across Research organization is to focus on developing strategic business partnerships with Research leadership to shape and deliver portfolio of technology and data opportunities that are most critical and transformational for the Research organization. Reporting to Vice President, Scientific Computing, the newly created role of Business Engagement leader for these groups across San Diego, Boston, and Oxford Research centers will lead delivery of innovative and strategic solutions to accelerate drug discovery and development. We are looking for a highly innovative and forward-thinking leader who is passionate about science and technology to transform biotech industry. Responsibilities:


Set and execute vision, strategy and product & data roadmap for the Chemistry discipline across RPPS. Collaborate with Research and Technology leadership teams to lead development of short-term and long-term technology roadmaps to accelerate discovery of transformative medicines Develop strategies for handling large datasets arising from innovation in Chemistry – e.g. Nano Organic Synthesis which require transformation of underlying technology and data solutions to scale up drastically Transform Global Sample Management, High Throughput Screening and instrumentation platforms, and sample registration solutions to ensure data integrity Simplify and Digitize research processes to enable data/meta data capture and develop advanced analytics to fully capitalize value of data and enable innovation at scale Identify opportunities within Research to leverage Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning to enable new hypothesis generation. Modernize current landscape of hundreds of homegrown fragmented solutions to achieve Vertex 2030 vision by developing integrated platform-based solutions. Provide Technology and data leadership to the San Diego research site and the IT team. Scale-up Computational Chemistry methods and underlying platforms to meet growing needs of the company. Be the Technology partner for the site research senior leadership. Inspire a culture of excellence and innovation Lead a team of scientific and technical professionals and managers to achieve business outcomes Attract, develop, and retain talent Monitor external landscape for scientific and technical advancements and bring in relevant opportunities to advance research at Vertex. Develop and manage financial budget for the area of responsibilities

Basic Qualifications:


MS/PhD degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, or other life sciences domain 15+yrs of relevant experience in Biopharma industry delivering innovative solutions

Preferred Qualifications:


Knowledge of Cloud technologies preferable AWS services and experience with agile software development methodologies including CI/CD At least 8 years of experience in a leadership role managing global team responsible for developing Chemistry related technology solutions. Ability to lead and manage cross-functional programs enabled by technology Ability to inspire and improve the performance of team members Demonstrate effective interpersonal, communications and negotiation skills for a wide variety of audiences, including senior management. Strong written and verbal communications skills required Demonstrated high learning agility and flexible thinking. Ability to coach and mentor team members.
