Position Summary

The UNC Department of Ophthalmology is nationally recognized for a full range of ophthalmic subspecialties as well as offering comprehensive ophthalmology. Many of our faculty members are recognized in the publication Best Doctors in America. Special areas of interest include: oculo-plastic surgery, ocular oncology, macular degeneration, retinal and vitreous surgery, neuro-ophthalmology including brain tumors, optic neuritis, and ocular neuro-motor diseases, corneal transplantation, refractive and cataract surgery, complex external disease consultation and pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Specialty clinics are held in low vision, inherited eye disease, sickle cell retinopathy, refractive surgery and cosmetic oculo-plastic surgery.


We are seeking a talented postdoctoral fellow to join our team to focus on drug/gene therapy of retinal disorders with nanotechnology and biomaterials. The project has considerable translational potential. The successful candidate is expected to have research experience in the design and synthesis of diagnostic and therapeutic nano biomaterials, modification of biomolecules for bio-conjugation, cell culture, peptide/protein/DNA/RNA detection, apoptosis assays, cell proliferation assays. The initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of renewal based on productivity and performance and the availability of funding.




Educational Requirements

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or closely related discipline.




Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have a strong publication record, creative thinking, effective oral and written communication skills, and good team spirit. Applicants should be self-motivated, dedicated, adaptable and capable of multitasking.


A strong research background in molecular biology, chemistry, protein expression, cell culture, imaging/fluorescence microscopy, and animal handling are preferred. Research experience in ophthalmology, polymer chemistry and nanomedicine is a big plus.
