Postdoctoral Appointee - AMO Physicist

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

What Your Job Will Be Like

Organization 05225, Photonic Microsystems Technology, in seeking a motivated, creative experimental AMO physicist Postdoctoral Appointee to join their multi-disciplinary team to support their existing research into trapped ion-based quantum sensing and information applications.

The successful candidate will experimentally demonstrate quantum processes using ions trapped with micro-fabricated surface traps in an effort to construct a novel, miniature optical atomic clock system for DARPA’s A-Phi program. The work will be on the cutting-edge of integrating laser optics, single-photon detectors, and micro-fabricated surface traps into a single device, with an eye towards helping quantum technology make a real-world impact. The selected candidate will encounter a broad range of scientists and engineers while being exposed to Sandia’s world-class quantum systems design and fabrication capabilities.

A strong desire to translate laboratory research into viable, relevant technology is a must.

Qualifications We Require A PhD in AMO Physics, Engineering, or another closely related field, conferred within five years prior to employment The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE-L level security clearance Qualifications We Desire Experimental experience with ion and/or neutral atom trapping and lasers, vacuum chamber construction, or cryogenics Skills programming for experimental control software and data analysis Knowledge of integrated photonics devices An established authorship and innovation record, such as peer-reviewed scholarly articles, patents, or technical books A proven track record of successful execution of research-and-development projects, including project planning, defining achievements, and delivering results on time Excellent written and verbal communication skills Teamwork skills for working in a multi-disciplinary team environment Meticulous attention to detail About Our Team

The Photonic Microsystems Technologies Department exploits science and technology at the nano and micro scales to enable advances in systems for national security. Our engagement is with a broad spectrum of technologies and a diverse field of customers with a successful record of maturing technology from concept to laboratory demo to prototype. The department consists of teams that lead the development and understanding of quantum effects associated with silicon electronic devices, atomic and molecular gases, and trapped electrons, atoms and ions. Most significantly, with a strong presence in the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications (MESA) facility and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) and working broadly with other Sandia and external organizations, we fabricate electronic structures and devices that use these effects to achieve new levels of performance at the integrated system level. Core technology areas in the department include nanofabrication of silicon devices; electromagnetic modeling; and ion trap and solid-state quantum information science and technology.

Position Information

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
