Multifunctional Materials and Structures Scientist

HRL Laboratories is a jointly-owned research laboratory for The Boeing Company and General Motors. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean, HRL has pioneered state-of-the-art research and development for more than 70 years. HRL's scientists and engineers are on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and providing real-world technology solutions for the aerospace, automotive and defense industries.

The Scaled Nanotechnology group at HRL is focused on developing new, multifunctional materials and coatings by controlling nano/micro-scale architecture to tailor properties. We are focused on using scalable processes to rapidly mature technologies from fundamental discovery to commercial products.

Education Desired:

Ph.D. in Materials Science, Applied Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or closely related field with an emphasis in structured materials and/or photonics.

Job Description:

We are seeking a candidate to join our dynamic, interdisciplinary team addressing cutting edge industrial and basic materials science research. A successful candidate will develop new materials and devices that address long-standing practical challenges in the automotive, aerospace and defense fields. General areas of interest include large-scale (meter square +) passive and active devices that interact with the environment through changes in optical, electronic, and/or electrochemical properties. Solution processed devices that function in the visible and/or infrared bands and the ability to simulate and optically test these devices is of interest. New approaches to creating large scale, cost-feasible structured materials that can be deployed over large areas is of particular interest. The successful candidate will design, build, test, simulate and deliver multifunctional materials and/or subsystem components to demonstrate functionality in advanced applications. The successful candidate will propose and lead new research projects and will work both independently and within interdisciplinary teams. Position will require regular communication of complex technical ideas to diverse audiences, both through presentations, proposals and papers, and therefore, excellent communication and writing skills are essential.

Experience Desired:

Familiarity designing, synthesizing/fabricating, developing and characterizing stimuli responsive materials and devices. The ability to safely perform wet chemical synthesis and processing is very helpful. Experience modeling optical and electrical properties, validating and predicting system-level device properties is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work productively and energetically both independently and as a member of a team. A history of technical innovation demonstrated through scientific publications and technical presentations is desirable along with experience with proposal writing.

Knowledge Desired:

Ability to connect physical theory to structure and function to predict and tailor material properties and behavior. Familiarity with processing, characterization and simulation techniques spanning multiple length scales desired. Broad interest in innovation that addresses over-the-horizon automotive, aerospace and defense challenges is essential.

Essential Physical/ Mental Requirements:

Must be able to perform work safely in a chemical laboratory environment. May be required to travel.

Special Requirements:

U.S. citizenship required.

Keywords: structured materials, photonic materials, nanoassembly, tailored optical materials, optical devices

Keywords: Physical chemist, materials scientist, applied physics, polymer chemist, multifunctional materials, dynamic materials

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
HRL offers a very competitive compensation and benefits package. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401K match, gym facilities, PTO, growth potential, and an exciting and challenging work environment.

HRL Laboratories is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer and does not discriminate in recruiting, hiring, training or promoting, on the basis of race, ethnicity, color, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, physical or mental disability, pregnancy, medical condition, age, U.S. military or protected veteran status, union membership, or political affiliation.
