Job Summary

Caltech scientists are now embarking upon a major project to develop nanotechnology enabling deep profiling of the single-cell proteome and metabolome. This work is being pursued in close collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific. To enable this effort, a cohort of scientists/engineers will be hired to work at Caltech (Pasadena, CA, USA) in complementary areas spanning proteomics and single-cell analysis, nano systems development, high frequency/microwave engineering, ultralow temperature physics, optics and integrated photonics, software-defined instrumentation, and bioinformatics enabled by AI/machine learning. This job posting is part of a larger effort to assemble this project.

This specific job posting solicits a senior applicant for a position involving all aspects of conceptualization, design, fabrication, and characterization of ultra-low temperature instrumentation. The successful candidate will interact daily with the project PI, and the device research & design team comprising the engineering staff, and academic researchers. This work will utilize the successful candidates' deep experience and significant achievements in ultra-low temperature physics to conceptualize and implement practical fabrication strategies for prototype instruments from engineering plans devised by the PI, the candidate, and the engineering team. Subsequently, successful candidates will have the opportunity take part in commercialization of successful instrumentation.

Candidates will solely be considered at the most senior level. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experience. The candidate must carefully document all work and report progress weekly to the PI, according to the project's established protocols.

Job Duties

The job duties comprise the complete spectrum of conceptualization, detailed engineering, fabrication, and characterization of precision ultra-low temperature instrumentation. Among such tasks are:
Assessment of the technological requirements for requisite ultra-low temperature instrumentation through detailed interaction with PI and senior engineering personnel. Calculations and numerical simulations of physical processes that are critical to the custom instrumentation planned. Development of detailed 3D engineering drawings and complete specifications for instrumentation components to be constructed. Sourcing and selection of parts and materials for instrument sub-components. Management of sub-contractors engaged to fabricate instrument sub-components, followed by subsequent evaluation of fabricated sub-components upon their delivery. Supervision of assembly of sub-components into complete instrumentation building blocks. Development of test procedures and documentation to validate performance of sub-components and completed instrumentation. Supervision and guidance of junior employees engaged in instrument development.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. degree in low temperature experimental physics is essential. A minimum of twenty years of recent, hands-on experience in conceiving, planning, fabricating and employing diverse instrumentation for precision measurements in the low millikelvin range. A significant portfolio of successful ultra-low temperature instrumentation and research projects. Expert proficiency in 3D CAD, using the SolidWorks or equivalent platforms. Expert proficiency in thermal transport calculations at ultra-low temperatures. Good written and oral communication skills. Exceptional organizational skills, with a demonstrated high level of attention to details. Excellent skills for managing junior employees or students.
Additionally, successful candidates:
Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds, but heavy or continual lifting not expected. May be required to travel infrequently for this project.
