What You Will Do
The Materials Physics and Applications (MPA) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory is currently seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Division Leader (DDL).
The MPA DDL will help lead and manage an organization of ~300 researchers and staff to execute a portfolio of ~$95M per year. MPA Division provides an intellectually stimulating environment for the pursuit of basic and applied materials physics and chemistry, enabling the development of new technologies to solve pressing national energy and security challenges. MPA operates two world-class user facilities, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory-Pulse Field Facility, and the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies, as well as unique experimental capabilities and infrastructures essential to understanding and controlling functional materials properties. The Division's staff has an excellent publication record in high impact journals and a distinguished record of recognition through numerous major fellowships, awards, and prizes. MPA Division has strong national and international collaborations with academia, industry, and other national laboratories.
The DDL will work closely with the MPA Division Leader (DL) to provide leadership, vision, strategic and tactical planning, and management for high quality research and development across the MPA Division. The DDL position requires customer service orientation, demonstrated leadership qualities, and the ability to interact effectively at all levels. In addition to technical leadership and management, the deputy division leader will be expected to help develop personnel, recruit and retain critical skills in the workforce, support diversity and inclusion, as well as promote a safe and secure working environment.
What You Need
Demonstrated record of excellent leadership, management, and supervisory skills including the development of personnel.
Significant record of technical leadership in physical sciences, such as experience in leading\managing broad, complex organizations or programs.
Experience in developing and implementing strategies to foster science and build technical capability, develop research programs, and improve technical infrastructure and facilities.
Demonstrated experience in management of an organization conducting research in the physical sciences including managing budgetary resources and engaging with technical leadership to evaluate and resolve institutional issues.
Proven track record of attracting, evaluating, mentoring, developing, motivating, and retaining creative, talented people in a technical organization.
A strong record of advocacy and innovation, and a commitment to scientific excellence.
Ability to establish trust and deliver on commitments while ensuring operational effectiveness.
Demonstrated commitment and experience in assuring a healthy, safe, and secure working environment, which includes a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Successful management of high output scientific facilities requiring stringent environmental, safety and health standards.
Ability to obtain a Q-clearance, which typically requires US citizenship
Desired Qualifications:
Knowledge of MPA Division's technical and research portfolio and an understanding of how the portfolio supports LANL's national security mission.
Working knowledge or prior experience in the DOE/NNSA Laboratory environment.
Knowledge of external funding agencies (DOE, NNSA, DoD, DHS, etc.), including significant experience and engagement with programmatic sponsors (programmatic interaction, strategy development, and/or change of station).
Experience with national user facilities.
Experience with DOE Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences programs, and DOE's Applied Energy program offices.
Working knowledge of the Nuclear Weapons Program strategy, initiatives, and future directions.
Active involvement in one or more professional associations relevant to MPA science and technology
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos.

Education/Experience: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in physics, materials science, materials chemistry, or a related discipline from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A PhD strongly preferred.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
