MELLON POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP, MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) (two-year fellowship), to collaborate with faculty and invited guests on the development and production of an international symposium and a publication issuing from the event (please see the 2014 symposium Seeing/Sounding/Sensing and subsequent book, Experience: Culture, Cognition, and the Common Sense, the 2017 symposium Being Material, book and website, and the 2021 symposium Unfolding Intelligence: The Art and Science of Contemporary Computation).
The fellow will be hosted by MIT’s academic unit in the visual arts, the Art, Culture, and Technology (ACT) program and will be eligible to teach through this program. The fellow will teach at least one course but no more than three during the appointment. Additional duties of the CAST postdoctoral fellow may include supervision of students engaged in undergraduate research opportunities (UROPs) at the intersection of the arts, science and technology.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: Ph.D., DMA, or other terminal doctoral degree (received within the past three years); and administrative experience and capabilities. Scholars from any relevant field will be considered, but a demonstrated interest in transdisciplinary research and artistic practice is required. Those whose work engages the role of the arts, critical design, humanities, or media studies in major initiatives at MIT around artificial intelligence, the climate crisis, computing, materials science, and nanotechnology are encouraged to apply. Those who have not formally received a doctoral degree at the time of application must forward certification from the Registrar’s Office, department head, or the Graduate Studies Office at their institution to confirm that they are expected to earn a Ph.D. prior to June 30, 2022.
Fellows may not hold other appointments during the period of the fellowship and must be in residence at MIT during the entire term of the position.
The salary will be $71,443 in the first year with a 2.5% increase in the following year, plus health benefits. Will also receive a fund of $2,500 each year to cover travel and other costs associated with research and professional development.
