Postdoctoral Research Associate

What You Will Do

A position is available at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory for a highly talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in the characterization of single quantum emitters using optical and microwave spectroscopy techniques. A key aim of the research will be to discover, develop, and characterize novel nanophotonic materials as for next-generation solid-state qubits and single-photon light sources. As such, the successful candidate will show promise for characterizing optical nanomaterials to develop a better understanding of the interplay between chemistry, structure, and function of nanoscale materials and devices. One particular goal of our research is the development of tools to facilitate the study of individual solid-state qubits in support of LANL's scientific mission to characterize emergent phenomena in novel nanoscale materials. To address these research goals, successful candidates will be expected to:
Conduct research to develop Nitrogen Vacancy center-based microscopy techniques for mapping the locations and properties of qubits in solid-state nanomaterials. Work with team members to develop electron spin resonance techniques for the characterization of population and coherence dynamics of solid-state qubits. Communicate research results through reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
The CINT has a history of groundbreaking achievements in the development and characterization of quantum nanomaterials. You will have the opportunity to work with a number of internationally recognized experts in the fabrication and characterization of these materials.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
Substantial research experience in one or more of the fields of the study of microscopic characterization of quantum emitters, condensed-matter physics, and simulation of quantum systems Demonstrated research ability, as evidenced by publications, reports, presentations, awards, etc. Excellent communication skills, as evidenced by publications and a cogent cover letter Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment. A commitment to supporting a safe and organized working environment.
Education: Ph.D. in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field from an accredited college or university, must be completed within the past five years or soon to be completed.

Desired Qualifications:
Previous research with Nitrogen Vacancy centers and/or optically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopy techniques Experience with the optical spectroscopic characterization of nanoscale materials. Experience with Electron Spin Resonance instrumentation and spectroscopy techniques Knowledge of low-temperature, cryogenic, measurement techniques Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
COVID Vaccine:

The COVID vaccine is mandatory for all Laboratory employees, on-site contractors, and on-site subcontractors unless granted an accommodation under applicable state or federal law. This requirement will apply to those working on-site, those teleworking, and all new hires.

Note to Applicants:
Please include a curriculum vitæ with a publication list-preferably with citation counts-and a detailed cover letter (guideline: 1-2 pages) that describes your research interests and qualifications and addresses how your qualifications meet the job requirements. You should provide the names of three people who can serve as references for your abilities. The position has a flexible starting date. To express interest, or for additional questions, please contact Andrew Jones ([email protected]) Strong candidates may be eligible for a Laboratory fellowship.
