Department Summary

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at San Jose State University (SJSU) invites applications for one full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We highly encourage candidates with specialization in: biomedical electronics, bioinstrumentation, bioimaging, biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical device design and/or manufacturing. Research areas focusing on health equity with interests in addressing health outcomes disparities, including strategies to enhance public health and social welfare systems, and developing alternative and less invasive therapies for those who live with a wide range of chronic diseases and/or disabilities, among other issues are of particular interest.

The BME Department is home to dynamic programs for BS and MS degrees in Biomedical Engineering. We have developed strong ties and collaborations with the biomedical engineering industries around us. Our BS and MS curricula were developed in close consultation with our Industry Advisory Council (IAC). They engage our students, share their practical experiences and sometimes teach some of our classes, thus ensuring our graduates are “industry-ready.” Our BS and MS programs are home to approximately 500 students, many of who are engaged in academic research with faculty, or work on projects with industries. Our full-time faculty are all active researchers and are successful in attracting major funding from industry, local and state-wide funding programs, and federal institutions such as the NIH, NSF and the DoD. Their research interests span advanced biomaterials, prosthetics and orthotics, microfluidic devices for diagnostics, nanotechnology for drug delivery, and cardiovascular devices, among others.

The BME Department, College of Engineering, and San José State University value diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Our excellence in research, teaching, and service can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. SJSU enrolls more than 36,000 students, many of whom are historically underserved, and around 45% are first-generation and 38% are Pell-recipients. SJSU is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) Serving Institution. The university’s commitment to social justice extends from its vibrant, inclusive campus to an international network of over 275,000 alumni. As such, San José State is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty so our disciplines, students, and the community can benefit from multiple ethnic and gender perspectives.

Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service. We ask that all applicants include a Diversity Statement with their application package. A guide to writing this statement can be found at SJSU Diversity Statement Guidelines, along with information about how these statements will be evaluated.
