Research Associate - Chemistry and Materials

We are looking for a Research Associate to join the Substrate Chemistry group within the Consumables Development Department at Illumina. We are looking for a driven individual who is interested in Nanotechnology, Plastics, Biotechnology, Material Science, Polymer Chemistry, Polymer/Materials Characterization, Polymer Processing, or Materials Science. As a successful candidate you will work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment to assist in creating genomic analysis consumable devices that enable leading-edge medical research. Responsibilities: Plan and execute various laboratory activities with limited instruction to make detailed observations, plan, conduct, analyze, interpret, and report recommendations Participate in product development activities, including various aspects of planning, feasibility, operation, and transfer Work on cross-functional teams to develop novel chemical solutions to development challenges. This includes working with members having backgrounds in chemistry, molecular biology, instrument software, & hardware engineering Assist in fabrication, modification, functionalization and/or characterization of prototype products Manage goals within defined target timeframes Perform data analysis; write reports and present results and project assessments Keep a detailed laboratory notebook Listed responsibilities are an essential, but not exhaustive list, of the usual duties associated with the position. Changes to individual responsibilities may occur due to business needs. Requirements: Laboratory experience with synthetic chemistry, polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, and/or nanofabrication Knowledge of the principles of reaction kinetics and molecular interactions Strong troubleshooting and optimization experience Ability to think and work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team environment Must be a creative, passionate, detail oriented person with excellent analytical, verbal and written communications skills Must have a desire to be part of a fast-paced and dynamic development environment Must be fluent in use of Word, Powerpoint, and Excel Product development experience, including assay optimization, reagent development, integration and testing, transfer to production and documentation are a plus Experience with polymers, polymerization techniques, adhesives, and characterization of these materials is a plus Experience with one or more of the following analytical methods a plus: FTIR, UV-Vis Spectroscopy, HPLC, SEC Education: B.S. or M.S. in chemistry, materials sciences, chemical engineering or related field with 0 - 2 yrs laboratory experience All listed requirements are deemed as essential functions to this position; however, business conditions may require reasonable accommodations for additional task and responsibilities.
