Senior Scientist - Synthetic Biology: Diagnostics & Therapeutics

Work as a technical consultant to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office (BTO) supporting the development and management of existing research and development (R&D) programs as well as the design, development, and execution of new programs and initiatives pertaining to applications of synthetic biology at the intersection of detection, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Program efforts include development and validation of diagnostic detection technology platforms for rapid pathogen characterization, development of field-deployable non-contact technologies for injury detection and health monitoring; discovery of novel diagnostic and prognostic injury biomarkers; development and validation of machine learning models to support clinical decision-making; development of adaptive, closed-loop clinical systems to optimize patient care; biomaterial engineering for wound treatment; and development of bio-artificial blood substitutes.


Primary responsibilities:


Monitor and assess developments in emerging science and engineering technologies Interact with world leaders in both industry and academia while serving as a representative of DARPA Facilitate and orchestrate collaborative engagement among various teams with other technologies currently under development within related programs Maintain and leverage technical expertise to provide clients with strategic assessments of new technologies and develop technical research programs Interact with top scientists and engineers to guide their research toward new and revolutionary advances Create technical reports, communicate findings to stakeholders, track and guide technical progress of client contracts, and perform other related tasks as required by the client Engage with end users and customers to transition technologies, including maintaining cooperative engagements and facilitating stakeholder engagements

QUALIFICATIONS


Desired Qualifications:


Ph.D. in a field relevant to the support of synthetic biology, medical diagnostics, nanotechnology, materials science, systems engineering, microfluidics, and applied biotechnologies. Postdoctoral or equivalent industry experience and/or relevant laboratory expertise to assess technologies across a broad range of applications. Demonstrated experience in at least one (1) or more of the following: Gene editing Synthetic biology Development of novel detection platforms Biochemistry Structural biology Medical diagnostics Biosurveillance Materials science Nanotechnology Microfluidics Biosecurity Clinical/animal studies Infectious disease Countermeasure development Experience with regulatory requirements (e.g. FDA Q-Submission) Experience with Test and Evaluation (T&E) and/or Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Ability to obtain a US Government SECRET security clearance. Active clearance strongly preferred. Relocation to the Washington, DC metro area

Additional Qualifications:


Experience in providing technical program management Strong technical writing skills Ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to broad audiences, digest basic and applied research across areas of biotechnology, and apply to DoD capability gaps Ability and willingness to explore scientific literature for emerging technologies and learn completely new research subjects
