Patent Scientist - Office of Technology Management

Position Summary The Patent Scientist at Washington University’s Office of Technology Management (OTM) will support the department’s Patent Agents in the analysis and patenting of university intellectual property including the preparation of patentability analysis summaries, patent applications and associated filing papers, and office action responses associated with prosecution of patent applications, as well as the review and reporting of incoming communications and deadlines.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities


Patentability Analysis - Drafts templates and perform patentability analyses of Washington University inventions. Patent Application Preparation – Drafts templates of patent applications. Patent Scientist will ensure that the appropriate formatting is applied, all data and examples are inserted, and may draft additional description and claims. Prepares figures and sequence listings as required. Prepares formal filing documents, including PCT electronically-generated forms, Application Data Sheets, and other formal documents as required in association with patent applications. Pre-Exam Formalities – Drafts templates and responses to pre-exam notices, such as Invitations to Correct Defects, Payment of Additional Search Fees, Restriction Requirements, etc. Information Disclosure Statements - Prepares templates and obtain references for Information Disclosure Statements. Patent Prosecution – Drafts template responses to Office Actions, including inserting claims and proposed strategies for arguments. Post-Allowance Activities – Drafts analysis related to the review and reporting of Notices of Allowance.

Preferred Qualifications


PhD degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, or related fields. Working knowledge of therapeutics, pharmaceutical sciences, biotechnology, immunology, medical diagnostic devices and methods, medical imaging devices and methods, biomedical engineering, chemistry, nanotechnology, electrical engineering, and/or artificial intelligence. Patent preparation and prosecution experience. Registered to practice with the USPTO. Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and tact. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to function effectively under tight deadlines and high volume. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks/requests/assignments and manage multiple priorities. Working knowledge of intellectual property. Ability to utilize computerized systems – data entry, word processing, e-mail, internet, etc. Ability to maintain a detail-oriented workload. Effective communication skills (written and verbal). Excellent customer service orientation. Proficiency with online search strategies in literature and patent databases. Rapid proficiency of the IP database systems. Ability to interact professionally with outside parties, and with faculty and administrative staff at the University.

Required Qualifications

BS in biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, or related fields and three years of experience or MS in biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering or related fields and one year of experience.


Grade G14

Salary Range Base pay is commensurate with experience.

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
