We provide Scientific, Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) support to Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, VA. For sixty years, DARPA has held to a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security.
We have an immediate need for a Sr. Scientist in support of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Biological Technologies Office (BTO). Candidates will support the development and management of projects and initiatives in topics pertaining to applications of synthetic biology at the intersection of detection, diagnostics, and therapeutics.
Current and planned efforts include development of novel gene editing tools, development and validation of diagnostic detection technology platforms for rapid pathogen characterization, development of field-deployable non-contact technologies for injury detection and health monitoring; discovery of novel diagnostic and prognostic injury biomarkers; development and validation of machine learning models to support clinical decision-making; development of adaptive, closed-loop clinical systems to optimize patient care; biomaterial engineering for wound treatment; and development of bio-artificial blood substitutes. Ideal candidates will have experience in gene editing, synthetic biology, development of novel detection platforms, biochemistry, structural biology, medical diagnostics, biosurveillance, materials science, nanotechnology, microfluidics, biosecurity, clinical/animal studies, infectious diseases, regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA Q-submission), countermeasure development, test and evaluation, and coordination of independent verification and validation. Operational experience, experience with DoD overseas medical missions, and experience coordinating across agencies and departments is highly desired.

Supporting a program(s) within the Biological Technologies Office Briefing support and general administrative actions in support of the program(s) Data analysis Travel may be required up to 10% of the time Qualifications: REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Ability to obtain and maintain a minimum Secret DoD Security Clearance. Active clearances are preferred. Ph.D. or in a field relevant to the support of synthetic biology, medical diagnostics, nanotechnology, materials science, systems engineering, and applied biotechnology and must have a breadth of experise to assess technologies across a broad range of applications. Excellent organization and communication are required as is the ability to coordinate disparate, parallel tasks related to different programs. Candidates must be willing to grow beyond the specialty acquired in their formal education/training via ad hoc learning of new technical domains reflective of program requirements. Candidates should be able to perform rapid review of unfamiliar technical literature to identify the state-of-art technologies, their limitations and promises, and the parties responsible for their development. A wide variety of tasks are associated with this position, including briefing support, data analysis, and general administrative duties. U.S. Citizenship required.
