Senior Director, Technical Communities & Grants

AIChE, founded in 1908, is a professional society of more than 60,000 chemical engineers in 110 countries. Its members work in corporations, universities, and government, using their knowledge of chemical processes to develop safe and useful products for the benefit of society. AIChE fosters and disseminates chemical engineering knowledge, provides opportunities for the professional and personal growth of its members, and applies the expertise of its members to address societal needs and improve the quality of life. Through its varied programs, AIChE continues to be a focal point for information exchange on the frontiers of chemical engineering research in energy, sustainability, biological and environmental engineering, nanotechnology, and chemical plant safety and security.


Position Summary


We are seeking a Senior Director with an executive presence and business acumen to join our Technical Communities business unit. This critical role, the Senior Director will lead a team of Engineers and operations staff who manage national and international conferences/meetings of various scientific and engineering communities while also focusing on innovation and agility to increase our offerings beyond conferences. They will partner cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, and Publications to reach, transform and elevate our market impact. This is a critical role for AIChE. The successful person will have expertise in Biological Engineering will use their broad experience across multiple areas to become an expert advisor to the Society of Biological Engineering board, executives and their staff. This role reports into the Chief of Technical Operations, Membership and Business Development and is expected to build trust and be able to influence.


Responsibilities


Develop, expand and implement strategic initiatives to grow opportunities in Biological Engineering, Regenerative Engineering, Sustainability, Energy, Manufacturing, Food Technologies, and Bioethics and Biosecurity Implement various societies’ business models to sustain growth Organize and manage different business units within the department Sustain, develop and grow new and established events Be accountable for the effective day-to-day operations and results of different business units Develop and/or maintain stake holder relationships including industry/academia/ and government Manage and exceed conference budgets for products and services including various conferences Write and adapt abstracts and reports for multiple stakeholders Source potential grants and write winning grants that are in alignment with multiple entities Coach and develop employees to their best selves further developing a high performing team

Educational & Experience Requirements


Technical degree in bio-related engineering; MSc, MBA or PhD preferred Minimum of 8-12 year’s relevant work experience in biological or chemical engineering after acquiring the undergraduate degree Strong business acumen with proven P & L experience Managing 4 or more employees Prior experience with volunteer organizations, a plus
