The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks interested applicants for a tenured faculty position as Director of the Health Care Engineering Systems Center (HCESC) at the Urbana campus. The HCESC is a unique and world-leading translational research center that provides clinical immersion and collaborations for engineering researchers with clinicians and social scientists, develops new technologies and cyber-physical systems, enhances clinical training and health care delivery, and in collaboration with key partners, drives the training of health care professionals of the future, and deploys technologies for population and rural health. A major pillar of the HCESC is its close collaboration with OSF HealthCare, an integrated health system with 15 hospitals headquartered in Peoria, Illinois., with research programs supported by the OSF Jump Applied Research for Community Health through Engineering and Simulation (ARCHES) endowment of over $110M. In the past, this program has funded over 116 grants each between $75000 and $200,000 to connect clinicians to the faculty of the campus. The next Director will provide the vision to lead HCESC into a new era of impact in translational research in healthcare engineering systems, leveraging the resources of the center to create social good.
The Director will report to the Dean of the Grainger College of Engineering and will be expected to lead a group of faculty and researchers with backgrounds in engineering, human factors and ergonomics, psychology, data science, industrial design, education and simulation to perform cutting edge research at the nexus of engineering, medicine, social science, design, and education. The Grainger College of Engineering and the campus also enjoy institutional clinical partnerships with Mayo Clinic (Mayo Illinois Alliance for Technology Based Healthcare), and Carle Health, in part through the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, the world’s first engineering-based college of medicine. HCESC, as a unit of the Grainger College of Engineering, also partners on research and education activities with other colleges at the University of Illinois, including the College of Applied Health Sciences. The Director of the HCESC will leverage these partnerships and OSF HealthCare System collaboration to develop a strategic plan to grow the national and international impact of the center, lead the educational and research programs, as well as oversee the financial, personnel, and space resources for the center. They will be expected to expand the funding portfolio and growing partnership with the Jump Simulation and Education Center among other key partners, help recruit a prominent external advisory board and actively catalyze relationships between the campuses for innovative advances in healthcare and engineering.
