ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. Our suite of neutron and muon instruments gives unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. We support a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers, and on to fundamental studies of materials. Software is an essential part of all science at ISIS.
The ISIS computing division provides all of the software needs for scientists; including proposal management, scheduling, data reduction and data analysis. The ISIS computing division is a growing area and plays a crucial role in supporting the ISIS facility. The Scientific Software Group (SSG) provides ISIS with data reduction and analysis tools. This allows scientists to interpret their data and is a key part of what the ISIS facility provides.
The scientific software group is seeking a talented graduate to join our software development team:
1. Data Reduction – scientific software development where you will have a close working relationship which scientists as they treat instrument data which arises directly from our experiments!
2. Systems Development and R&D - you will be developing tools to automate some of the processes around data reduction and management. You will even have the chance to see and interact with some of our cutting-edge hardware!
Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities
Communicate and work with fellow software engineers, customers, scientists, engineers, and management including writing documentation for technical and non-technical users Design solutions making use of appropriate techniques and tools Write clear, well-structured code that implements the design and is easy to maintain Test and deploy your solutions, including helping to provide support after release Take an active role in both technical and non-technical meetings Participate in the wider department and STFC graduate training programme.
Once settled in, you will also be expected to
Lead work packages and projects through to completion Help colleagues with less experience get up to speed Mentor junior colleagues.
Training will be provided as necessary. In addition to a full induction and “on the job” training, you will have the opportunity to subscribe to professional online tutorial sites, attend conferences, attend technical courses, undertake various soft skills training and take part in our organisation-wide Early Careers conference, where you can network with other graduates and colleagues at the start of their career.

Obtained first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2020, 2021 or be due to receive it in 2022 Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above The right to live and work in the UK Experience of developing software with significant exposure to object-oriented programming and with a good knowledge of development tools. Experience of working in a team environment to deliver a project Excellent written and oral communication skills Experience of object-oriented software development in C++, python, C#, Java or similar
Desirable
An interest in science and/or mathematics Knowledge of neutron scattering Experience of web development technologies Knowledge of software development tools and methodologies and best practices Knowledge of relational database design and SQL Experience of software development on both the windows and UNIX platforms Experience of developing scientific software or software with similar challenges Experience of software development tools for version control, automated testing and build automation
