The School of Physics, Engineering & Computer Science is seeking to appoint a Senior Technical Officer to support our Physics Teaching laboratories. The School offers a range of degrees including in Physics, Robotics & AI, Computer Science, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Alongside our undergraduate teaching we support research in multiple, impactful research areas including Climate & Atmospheric Science, Biodetection, Nanotechnology, Materials, Energy & sustainable Design and more. Main duties & responsibilities The role entails the preparation of materials and equipment for practical, commercial and short course classes as required in one or more areas of the School. Primarily this will involve support for our specialist laboratory environments. On a day-to-day basis you will be involved in maintaining a safe operation of work around the laboratories, demonstrating safe use of laboratory equipment and specialist laboratory skills to all groups of staff and students. You will have the opportunity to showcase some of your more specialist skills and knowledge to motivate and enthuse our undergraduate and postgraduate students, generating that creative spark! Skills and experience needed You will need proven professional experience of working in a laboratory/workshop environment, ideally with students in the FE or HE sector. You will have a thorough knowledge of the relevant safety procedures applicable to use of chemicals in laboratories environments and to ensure that these procedures are adhered to and you will be able to comply with all Health and Safety regulations, both national regulation and local rules. As this role relates to support for both our teaching and research provision, we will support you to learn new techniques to support our evolving portfolio. You should be open and willing to work with colleagues from both Technical and Academic backgrounds to support our research and our students learning. You must be able to champion your specialist area(s), working closely with our Health & Safety Leads to ensure we support our students to develop their own skills in the area(s), adhering to all relevant Health & safety guidance. As we work both independently and within a team, you’ll be flexible in your approach and attitude, with a client-oriented approach and able to prioritise to meet deadlines. Good communication and interpersonal skills are key. Qualifications required You will hold a minimum of A-levels or equivalent qualifications, or have equivalent proven experience. A recognised qualification in an appropriate subject at degree or HNC/HND/BTec level or equivalent is desirable.
