Lumentum is seeking to hire an R&D (Co-op Student/Intern) for our Ottawa based team.


Lumentum DIB Scholarship


Lumentum will be awarding scholarships in 2022 to Canadian Co-ops and Interns. To be considered for the scholarship, the first thing you need to do is apply for a Lumentum internship/co-op opportunity so you can be considered for a job with us. To receive the DIB scholarship, you must complete a fall, winter, or summer work term with Lumentum.


The Opportunity...


8 month term (preferred): May 2022 to December 2022


4 month term: May 2022 to August 2022


What will you do in this role?


In this role you will be exposed to a number of state-of-the-art technologies including MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon), DOE (diffractive optics elements). The successful student will work in a R&D environment as part of a multidisciplinary team developing optical components for current and next generation telecom and consumer 3D sensing applications.


Roles and Expectations:


Development and implementation of test methods to characterize liquid crystal, MEMS, Diffractive Optics Elements and Silicon Photonics devices; Working cross-functionally within the MEMS, LC, Diffractive optics design groups and with internal and external ‘suppliers’ and foundries to design components, develop processes and methods to manufacture these components for various telecom and consumer applications (Active and passive devices); Data and root cause examination. Running reliability and verification interval tests to monitor components’ performance degradation/aging over time. Developing scripts for automating lab equipment. Running Optical, mechanical, or electrical simulation software tools.

What experience will allow you the greatest success in this role?


Recommended Education:


3rd or 4th year student pursuing a degree in Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology Engineering or a similar degree.

Skills:


Lab capability – carefully run tests, recognize and control confounding factors, keep organized records and labels Data Analysis – comparing datasets, finding trends, fitting models, plotting and presenting data to audiences of different backgrounds Excel/VBA, python & numpy, Matlab Familiarity with Characterization tools such as Optical Microscope, Interferometry, oscilloscope, signal generator, multi-meter, etc. General programming/scripting/automating Visual Basic, python Working knowledge or relevant courses in optics and/or fiber optic telecommunications; Hands on experience or relevant courses in Silicon processing – bulk and surface micromachining (lithography, spincoating, etching, etc.) Excellent interpersonal skills;

Plenty of FREE Parking, if you drive, and a conveniently located public transit stop in front of the building, if you take public transit. Lots of people also commute by bike during the summer, late spring and early fall. With the showers available on site, cycling makes for a good alternative.
