Postdoctoral Appointee – Nanocomposite Materials Development

Conducts research aligned with Argonne’s strategic missions. With mentoring, designs and carries out experiments, promotes findings through publications, presentations, program reports and other means of reporting outcomes. Contributes to discovery and technological advances. Strengthens career path opportunities by expanding technological skills, developing independent research capabilities and building professional skills such as communication, networking and leadership.


The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral appointee to conduct research related to the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposite materials and membranes for energy storage and filtration applications, such as lithium batteries, CO2 electrolyzes, and air filters. The candidate is expected to develop new recipes and fabrication processes as well as to understand material structure-property relationship. The candidate is also expected to think and work independently and perform in a highly interdisciplinary environment of chemists, physicists, and materials scientists.


Position Requirements


The prospective candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, materials science, applied physics, or a closely related field.


Knowledge of battery or fuel cell electrolyte and electrode materials.


Skills in using computer software for experiment design and data treatment, such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python, and COMSOL.


Skilled in oral and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.


Self-motivated independent worker as well and the ability to be a team player.

What will put you ahead:


Background in nanomaterials synthesis via chemical route, material structural and microstructure analysis (such as SEM, TEM, XPS, XRD, and Raman), and electrochemical analysis such as impedance spectroscopy is desired.


Experience and/or knowledge of electrospinning, electroplating, and slurry coating.


Knowledge in polymer synthesis and characterization.
