Lead Research Specialist, Integrated Electron Microscopy Core (IEMC)

Apkarian Integrated Electron Microscopy Core (IEMC) houses an array of electron microscopes and ancillary instrumentation at two sites on Emory’s main campus. This position will assist IEMC users in all steps of Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopy projects including sample preparation, screening, data collection and data processing. In addition, this staff member will report to the Core Director and will be expected to assist in routine IEMC activities, including daily operation and routine maintenance of IEMC equipment.
Primary responsibilities include: Work collaboratively with principal investigators, research staff, post-doctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students in discussing their project needs to advance their research goals within the electron microscopy framework. Manage scheduling of experiments and training. Analyze biological samples and nanomaterials using electron microscopy. Document procedures and write standard operating procedures for instrument use and method development. Plan and execute experiments and assist core users in electron microscopy sample preparation and imaging. Contribute to the implementation of new experimental methods in electron microscopy and sample preparation. Ensure accurate and appropriate data recording, maintenance and delivery from studies for IEMC customers. Provide guidance in sample preparation, data collection and in the use of current image processing programs. Maintain operation and perform routine equipment maintenance of the scanning and transmission electron microscopes and other IEMC equipment. Participate in the organization and maintenance of the IEMC infrastructure. JOB DESCRIPTION: Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures. Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques. May assist in protocol design. Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator. Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures. Analyzes and interprets results of studies. Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment. Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment. Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings. Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards. Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs. Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances. Performs related responsibilities as required. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Masters in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics or related field. Experience in the use of electron microscopes and equipment for electron microscopy sample preparation. Expertise in the use of current transmission and scanning electron microscopy methodologies. Excellent technical, communication, and training skills.
NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
