What You Will Do
Be a part of something transformative and extraordinary, and join our dynamic and enterprising group within a world class research institution, the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Our group, Physical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (C-PCS), is looking for a talented scientist to serve as deputy (R&D Manager 3) to the group leader, assisting with the development of our robust portfolio, and execution of programs of relevance to national security and scientific vitality. This will be a half-time (50%) position, with the other half time dedicated to the development of a scientific portfolio or other programmatic activities.
The deputy group leader for C-PCS partner with the group leader in order to provide strong scientific and technical leadership of this complex portfolio, as well as assist in the operational, financial and administrative management of the group. The group management will assist in programmatic development and serve as a champion for the technical capabilities and personnel within the group. In this regard, they will function as a key element of the divisional management team, sharing responsibility for the objectives and mission of Chemistry Division at large. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planning scientific and programmatic directions, ensuring sound management practices and addressing safety and security of the complex technical enterprise. In addition, the individual will also participate in ensuring environmental management, financial accountability and human resource issues - in partnership with the group leader. The deputy group leader will also help with recruitment and retention of new talent, address and mentor early career scientists and post-doctoral fellows towards career development.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Strong technical achievement in an area of science of relevance to the group, as demonstrated through publications/reports, technical presentations in national and international conferences, engagement in sponsor meeting/workshops, leadership of large and complex technical projects.
Experience operating or managing complex experimental facilities with hazard envelopes relevant to the group - lasers, nanoparticles, chemicals, radiological hazards and others.
Demonstrated ability to identify and successfully respond to new funding opportunities, program development experience, and assembling multi-disciplinary teams that traverse disciplinary and organizational boundaries.
Demonstrated record of personnel management and development, supervision, mentoring of employees, promoting teamwork. Management of resources, finances, capability development in order to build stronger and more resilient teams.
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, promoting team work and collaborative science
Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires US Citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Demonstrated working knowledge of LANL policies in integrated work management, safety, security, quality, environment, finance and human resources.
Experience in experimental spectroscopy methods, and awareness of the technical complexities of operations relevant to the group. e.g., techniques such as UV/Vis, IR-NIR, FTIR, LIBS, Raman (SERS), Fluorescence (multiphoton), ultrafast tunable lasers, transient absorption, and others.
Experience handling complex samples of relevance to the research within one or more of the group's focus areas-Chemical (organic, inorganic, nanoparticles), Biological (BSL2), Radiological, Nanomaterials, Explosives.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.
