Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept Portland State University is a public university located in the heart of one of the most progressive and vibrant cities in the U.S. The University is known nationally for its innovation, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives. The MME Department (www.pdx.edu/mechanical-materials-engineering) currently has 12 faculty members (11 tenure track), including 1 NSF CAREER Award recipient and 1 PECASE recipient. The Department offers four degree programs and one graduate certificate: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering (MSMSE), Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME), Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, and a Graduate Certificate in Semiconductor Materials and Manufacturing. All degree programs are accredited, the BSME program through ABET and the graduate programs through NWCCU.
The MME Department is committed to educate, inspire, prepare, and mentor students to excel as professionals and to grow throughout their careers in science and engineering. The Department nurtures a professional, collaborative, and supportive learning environment that encourages initiative, innovation, and willingness to change; promotes scholarship and teaching excellence; and sustains a vital, state-of-the-art research enterprise for students and faculty to create, interpret, apply and disseminate knowledge.

Position Summary The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) at Portland State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position. Exceptional candidates will also be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. The anticipated start date for this position is September 16, 2022, but earlier or later dates can be negotiated.
We are seeking applicants with expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics who will enhance or complement our existing areas of research expertise (https://www.pdx.edu/mechanical-materials-engineering/research-innovation), and/or whose work is aligned with the strategic vision of the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science (MCECS) (www.pdx.edu/cecs/strategic-vision). Current areas of MME faculty research include: wind and solar energy, indoor air quality and sustainable buildings, multi-phase flow, turbulent flows, micro and capillary fluidics, robotics, machine learning, controls, nanomaterials and nanomaterial fabrication, material fatigue, 3-D bioprinting, and electronics packaging.

The successful applicant will maintain scholarly and funded research activities; teach undergraduate and graduate classes; advise students; and provide service to the university, professional communities, and the public.

Primary Activity I - Instructional
Minimum Qualifications A minimum of a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or another relevant field is required. Candidates with an ABD will be considered, though the Ph.D. must be completed by the employment start date.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement The starting annual salary rate for this position will be between $85,000 and $93,916. The starting salary may be negotiable above this range, however it will be dependent upon the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR. PSU’s excellent benefits package includes 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities
