We seek a highly qualified individual for a full-time tenure-track faculty position with expertise in Robotics. Applicants in all areas of robotics will be considered and are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in individuals with research interests in "Soft Robotics,” which includes development, modeling, and control of innovative robotics concepts based on soft materials. The successful candidate must have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, and potential for establishing an externally funded research program.


The Department of Mechanical Engineering is organized academically into three groups: design and manufacturing, solid mechanics, and thermal/fluid mechanics. The robotics position is expected to be part of the design and manufacturing group. The department currently has 20 tenure-track/tenured faculty members. The candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with researchers in the areas of Robotics and Embodied Intelligence as well as Engineering Driven Medicine-a joint initiative between College of Engineering of Applied Sciences and School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.


The position is anticipated to start on or about August 18, 2022.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:


A PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.


Preferred Qualifications:


Strong record of teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses. Proven success with grant proposals. Strong publication record.

Department description: The Mechanical Engineering department is part of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS), which consists of nine academic departments, as well as the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) and the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC). Located 20 miles from Stony Brook, BNL is a multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world-class scientific programs utilizing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source, and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and the NewYorkBlue IBM BG/L+P supercomputer. As such, many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and, in some cases, joint appointments can be arranged.

This is a tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.


Anticipated Start Date: Fall 2022


In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) order that all hospitals and nursing homes “continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” Candidates who are not already vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol.
