Postdoctoral Research Associate - Soft Matter Simulation & Modeling

Requisition Id 7412

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Nanomaterials Theory Institute Group in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences Division (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to support research efforts on rheology and dynamics of soft materials by using molecular dynamics simulation and other computational tools.

As a Postdoc you will interact with an interdisciplinary team that includes experts on polymer rheology, neutron scattering, and theory, and you will have the opportunity to utilize US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Leadership Class Computing Facilities. You will be responsible for investigating the flow and deformation behavior of polymers using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations and other computational techniques. Particular attention will be paid to correlating simulation results to neutron scattering experiments that will be performed at DOE’s Spallation Neutron Source and High Flux Isotope Reactor as part of the broader research effort. Successful candidates will work within a collaborative team to advance molecular rheology and neutron scattering of polymers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Perform nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of polymers using atomistic and coarse-grained models Develop new methods to analyze simulation trajectories to advance understanding of the molecular response of polymers under flow and deformation Connect simulation and modeling results to neutron scattering experiments Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Material Sciences, or a related field, completed within the last 5 years

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in molecular simulation methods for soft materials Experience with simulation studies of soft matter rheology and dynamics using high performance computing Experience with the Linux operating system, Python, C/C++, and/or FORTRAN Experience with MPI, OpenMP, CUDA and/or OpenACC An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals Excellent written and oral communication skills Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
