Two Postdoctoral Research Positions in Antibiotic Capture

The laboratory of Professor Amir Sheikhi ( www.sheikhilab.com ) at the Department of Chemical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) has two immediate postdoctoral research openings for exceptional, well-trained PhD graduates in the field of in vivo drug capture with the focus on antibiotic removal from the body. The highly motivated postdoc researcher will focus on developing the next generation of biomaterials for super-selective capture, removal, and deactivation of antibiotics.

The applicants must have a profound background in the following skills:

(a) Design, synthesis, and characterization of antibiotic antagonists

(b) In vitro mammalian and/or bacterial cell techniques (e.g., 2D and 3D cell culture models, cytotoxicity assays, gut-on-a-chip models, 3D imaging, immunohistochemistry, immunoimaging, and protein and gene expression analyses)

Other beneficial skills are:

(c) Artificial intelligence (AI) in drug discovery and development

(d) Cellulose-based nanomaterials (synthesis and chemical modification)

(e) Computer simulations (e.g., molecular dynamics)

(f) In vivo models (antibiotic resistance evolution in small animal models)

The successful applicants will join a highly multidisciplinary and diverse team of engineers and scientists with research interests and expertise in engineering soft materials for addressing some of the most pressing challenges of current century in biomedicine and environment. The laboratory of Prof. Amir Sheikhi is located in the new Chemical and Biomedical Engineering building ( https://www.che.psu.edu) at the heart of Penn State in downtown State College. The Department is strategically located in the walking distance to the Millennium Science Complex, a 275,600 square-foot science building housing two of the University’s premier research organizations: The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences ( https://www.huck.psu.edu ) and the Materials Research Institute ( https://www.mri.psu.edu ) providing one of the nation’s most elite research infrastructures with exceptional core facilities.

Applicants who hold a PhD in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science and engineering, biological engineering, microbiology, biochemistry, or other relevant fields are invited to apply for the position. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal.

Qualified postdoctoral applicants should direct their application package, including a cover letter clearly stating their (i) research skills in categories (a) to (f), (ii) current research, and (iii) future research/career plans, CV, and list of 3 references as a single PDF file to Amir via email.
