We invite applications for the position of Research Software Engineer in the Computational Chemistry and Nanomaterials Group within the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division.


The Computation Chemistry and Nanomaterials Group focuses on computational science and engineering to directly address chemical, condensed matter, combined systems on the quantum mechanical scale. We need lead development of the next generation of high-quality high-performance scientific software to do so. With ORNL’s world class computing resources we have unique opportunities to research and engineer mathematically rich, high performance and concurrency, maintainable, and extensible codes.



Job Duties and Responsibilities:


Contribute to the development of open-source software for scientific projects and original research including scientific papers, reports, and other artifacts. Work closely with stakeholders to meet their software requirements, address bugs, and achieve their scientific goals. Deploy, maintain, and support web applications, servers, and cloud development platforms in support of scientific projects. Participate in the roadmap, vision, and strategy for enhancing software quality. Mentor students to help them grow. Participate in developing the strategic direction of research software engineering at ORNL.


Basic Requirements:


A BS degree in physics, chemistry, computer science, or a related field. Experience with modern C++ (C++11 or newer). Linux, command line shell and IDE or multibuffer editor competence. 2+ years software development experience in computational science, engineering, computer science, or applied math.



Preferred Requirements:


MS degree in related field. BS and 5+ years of experience or MS and 3+ years of experience. Excellent communication and writing skills, including the ability to express both concrete and abstract algorithm and application design using UML or other means. Experience with software development methodologies, such as version control systems like Git and Subversion, iterative code synchronization methods like Gitflow, and test-driven design. Ability to accept and give constructive review of code. The ability to work on a team in a dynamic group environment with frequent delivery targets. One on one communication between developers occurs daily, teams meet frequently, projects practice Continuous Integration and frequent merging of source is expected. Prior experience developing or contributing to large, complex software systems. Activity within the broader open-source software community would be looked upon favorably but is not required. Experience using other languages, including the following: CMake, Python, Fortran, Java or other JRE languages, JavaScript. Familiarity with testing methodologies, writing and implementing unit, integration and system level tests, targeting both manual and automated testing processes. Familiarity with development tooling such as debuggers (lldb, gdb, ARM forge), automatic formatting (clang-tidy) and static analysis packages. Comfort with DevOps i.e. containerization and virtual machines, cloud resources and API’s such as AWS and OpenStack. Familiarity with Agile concepts and practices Experience with large scale scientific computing software such as DCA++ or QMCPACK, etc.

Code Sample:



An open-source code sample which may be used for evaluation purposes will be required during the application process. Your code sample should be related in some way to the subject of this post and be your sole work to a very high degree (>95%). Ideally, the code sample would be made available on GitHub or a similar sharing platform, although submissions by email are fine too.
