Pharmaceutical Sciences is a function within the AstraZeneca’s Biopharmaceuticals R&D unit and that creates innovative, cost effect solutions by transforming molecules into investigative medicines meeting unmet needs of future patients. The function has five departments: Early Chemical Development, Advanced Drug Delivery, Early Product Development and Manufacturing, Digitisation & Data Science and Modelling. Our wide-ranging portfolio of projects includes traditional small molecules, nucleotide-based therapies and nanomedicines across AstraZeneca’s therapy areas.



The Digitisation department is brand new and focused on digitally transforming ways of workings: delivering solutions that improve productivity and ensuring the complex experimental data Pharmaceutical Science teams and partners generate flows seamlessly to be available for data science & modelling.



You will be a lead member of this team directly collaborating with a diverse range of world-class scientists from across all our departments. Bringing a passion for working at the interface of science and digital you will be responsible for identifying and developing impactful, innovative & disruptive informatics solutions.



This role could be based at any of our sites with a significant Pharmaceutical Sciences presence: the Cambridge Hub, Macclesfield Campus or Gothenburg.



What
you’ll do


Innovate Develop, coordinate implementation and support informatics solutions to drive the creation & curation of appropriate datasets, facilitate improved science workflows & interrogate those datasets for scientific insight


Build strong collaboration with both scientists across Pharmaceutical Sciences & the Data Science and Modelling team


Build effective relationships with colleagues across disciplines in Pharmaceutical Sciences to identify & prioritise opportunities for improved workflow & data transfer solutions


Leads small informatics projects


Build strong relationships with an established range of stakeholders across the wider CMC community, IT organisations & the R&D Data office


Design and support the generation of complex data visualisations


Develop, maintain and apply ongoing knowledge and awareness in trends, standard methodology and new developments in analytics and data science


Be a leader across Pharmaceutical Sciences for digital transformation, agile working practices, FAIR data and the impact of data science.


Develop an understanding of the current informatics ecosystem within AZ and maintain awareness of external trends & opportunities.


Present or publish work for conferences and in peer reviewed journals


Implement working practices to ensure that solutions are delivered to robust quality & regulatory standard



Essential criteria


Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent years of experience) in mathematics, computer science, chemistry, pharmacy or material science, or a related discipline


Demonstrated experience of working within a scientific environment but with a passion to develop and learn new informatics skills OR an experienced data / computer scientist with a desire to work in close partnership with lab based scientists


Excellent written and verbal communication, business analysis, and consultancy skills · Basic skills in high level programming or pipelining tools (e.g. Python, Knime, PipelinePilot)



Desirable criteria


Master or PhD degree in mathematics, computer science, chemistry, pharmacy or material science, or a related discipline


Proven track record of publishing relevant results an tools in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and other scientific proceedings


Good understanding of the design, development, optimization, and scaling of informatics applications and solutions
