Staff Research Scientist – Meta-Biophotonics

The Samsung Semiconductor Inc. R&D Lab, located in Pasadena, California is currently recruiting world-class engineers who share our "Innovation through Passion" philosophy and thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven environment. The team aims at representing Samsung's leadership in large-scale sensor and imaging products. This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a talented and hard-working graduates to get involved in envisioning, prototyping and implementing cutting-edge photonic-empowered products with a growing team. There are immense opportunities to work alongside the systems and algorithms team on state-of-the-art research projects related closely to the Samsung imaging and sensing products alongside experts in the field. This position offers strong collaboration possibilities with SAIT Korea and other Samsung R&D centers in Silicon Valley and around the world to enhance the nanophotonic integration in versatile applications.



JOB RESPONSIBILITIES



The Metaphotonics team at Meta Vision Lab in Samsung Semiconductor Inc. R&D focuses on the research and development of innovative optical devices and solutions for imaging and sensing applications including high-resolution depth sensors, ultra-compact flat optical, spectroscopic and microscopic devices, bio-inspired optical systems with novel functionalities, and next-generation compact health sensing systems. The qualified individual will be responsible for:


Research and development of a wide variety of bio-nano-photonic components and systems for practical imaging and sensing products Explore cutting-edge technologies for our CMOS-compatible imaging products Contribution to optical biosensing systems with potential for commercialization Create quick prototypes and proof-of-concepts

Responsibilities include:


Propose, develop, and demonstrate low-power compact health sensing solutions including wearable and/or biomedical sensors for mobile applications Design, fabricate, and demonstrate bio-inspired and/or AI-empowered photonic sensors devices for CIS, LIDAR, healthcare and/or other fusion sensors Assist clinical teams for in-vitro/in-vivo testing of biomedical sensors used with smartphone-based imaging sensors Interacting with team to assist in the overall development of optical systems; developing and benchmarking system performance models and test evaluation Participate in design reviews of optical, optomechanical components, equipment, and systems Working closely with software engineers to optimize data processing algorithms and their implementation in hardware Demo system setup and evaluation Writing patent disclosures Prepare/submit manuscripts to WTC journals Serve as a contact hub for GRO and other Samsung's strategic and tactical collaboration programs with US institutes and companies Assist in creating new research program(s) in meta-biophotonics Recruit new talents to enhance and expand the lab's capability

REQUIRED SKILLS



MS degree in engineering or applied physics area with 5 years of industry experience minimum or PhD degree with equivalent academic experience Expert in micro- and nanofabrication of bio-M/NEMS, and micro- nanophotonic devices Expert in building and testing systems and products based on photonics and laser technologies Expert in biomolecular engineering, surface science for fluidic/biological applications, and small-scale biosensor development Proven track-record in developing biomedical micro-devices from conceptualization to early-stage testing Experience in working with optical components, optical bench for characterization of optical devices, and systems Expertise in various VIS-NIR-IR spectroscopic techniques Expert in complex building microfluidic platforms (multi-channel continuous flow/droplet-based) Expert in hardware bring-up, debug and troubleshooting Solid theoretical background in nanoscale optics, photonics, micro-optics, and biomolecular engineering Critically, must be a quick learner, able to continuously absorb, make sense of and put to immediate use large amounts of engineering information Excellent problem solving and strong analytical skills Good written and verbal communication skills Must be motivated and able to work without supervision Some travelling to Korea headquarter is required
