Summary


The Research Scientist conducts technical activities pertaining to fabrication and performance testing of Li – ion batteries with minimal daily oversight. The Research Scientist broadly applies chemical and electrochemical principles in troubleshooting processes, interpreting data, and reporting. The selected candidate will have extensive experience with the electrode and cell fabrication process as well as expertise in electrochemical characterization techniques. The selected candidate will be comfortable providing conclusions and recommendations based on battery investigations and literature reviews while working on prescribed timelines.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities:


Produce electrodes from a variety of LIB chemistries, assemble multiple cell formats and use electroanalytical methods such as cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy to explore battery performance. Manage optimization of cell components to hit performance metrics. Analyze large datasets and present findings (oral and written) for company meetings and presentations as well as contribute to manuscripts (both scientific and in support of sales marketing). Work in a collaborative environment with a team of diverse backgrounds and communicate results effectively. Identify opportunities for process control and improvement. Manage internal and external projects, proposing experiments, keeping projects on task and on time, tracking results and preparing reports. Assist junior staff: trouble shooting, providing technical guidance and training Adhere to principles governing a safe laboratory environment.

Required Education and Experience:


BS/MS/PhD (advanced degree preferred) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related Engineering degree with relevant electrochemical coursework. Minimum 1-year hands on battery/electrochemical experience. Experience operating battery testing equipment and interpreting subsequent data sets. Self-motivated and takes initiative to solve problems and explore underlying mechanisms.

Preferred skills:


Highly organized and able to maintain multiple disparate projects. Proficient in fabricating pouch cell formats. Experience with gloveboxes and air sensitive materials. High level problem-solving skills. Independent and self-driven.

Work Environment


Work is carried out in a wet chemical laboratory within a larger production facility. Employees in this role routinely handle hazardous chemicals. Appropriate PPE must be donned at all times including gloves, eye protection and lab coats. An employee in this position works in an environment in which safety, environmental and health concerns may demand constant attention. Strict adherence to corporate and/or plant policies, rules and regulations in these areas is required.

The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. At times, a respirator is required personal protective equipment to mitigate inhalation hazards. Employees are required to undertake and pass a respirator medical evaluation and annual respirator fit test.


The employee occasionally will work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, communicate. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. No travel is expected for this position.


Compensation


Salary: $70k - $80k Medical/dental/vision/disability and life insurance, holidays, PTO, Flexible Spending Account, and 401(k) plan.
