Job Summary This position is a Research Scientist working at the bench and pilot plant to support the development strategy of the business. People in this position will develop products/processes to enhance current products, derive new products and commercialize both for value addition to the business. This position will be the Subject Matter Expert for our Pilot Equipment in our Corona, CA R&D facility.
Essential Functions Research and product development with a focus on bioactive delivery systems. Develop a variety of delivery systems based on macro-molecular interactions between biopolymers and bioactives that will include rapid and slow sustained release formulations. Carry out stability studies for such developed ingredients. Establish a strong working relationship with the Glanbia Business Development team so that new products can be commercialized in a smooth, rapid manner. Evaluate market for new opportunities in conjunction with BD and develop ingredients and technologies to address. Formulate and produce new product prototypes within area of expertise. Operate pilot plant equipment as necessary to develop prototypes. Develop nutrition labels and ingredient labels using Genesis Software that meet FDA regulatory requirements. Plan and design robust experiments (experimental design) that can be statistically analyzed. Make technical presentations at conferences, meetings, trade shows, and customer visits. Work with contract manufacturers in scaling up new products

Qualifications Must possess a PhD degree, OR Master's degree with 2-5 years related experience and/or training; OR equivalent with five years related experience and/or training. We are looking for a candidate that has at least two to five years industrial experience and a broad background in nutritional product development, commercialization of new products, pharmaceutical and or hydro-colloidal formulation experience. Ability to commercially evaluate and prioritize with business development team Preferred to have experience in coatings, encapsulations and nano-technology Basic knowledge of different formulation techniques: Coacervation, conjugation, cross-linking, micelles, emulsions, liposomes, hydrogels, etc. Understand the physical chemistry concepts related to them. If experience in developing such formulations, that would be a plus. Basic understanding of pharmcokinetic concepts, such as bioavailability, encapsulation efficiency, etc. Must have experience with formulating delivery systems and analysis including but not limited to Zeta potential, HPLC, UPLC, MS, in vitro release studies, etc. Must have good communication skills and be able to interact with a broad range of groups (R&D, production, sales, business development, customers, suppliers) Must be willing to travel as required. Ability to synthesize new ideas and methods from reading and analyzing common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to write publication grade manuscripts and have experience in publishing scientific articles. Must have the ability to present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Proficient computer skills that allow analysis and interpretation of scientific data, graphics, statistical analysis and preparation of publication quality manuscripts. Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Must have a broad understanding of food processing and commercial acumen. Must be able to use laboratory instruments and equipment.
Typical Environmental Conditions May be exposed to moderate noise levels (i.e. office equipment, light traffic). May be exposed to humidity, intense heat, and toxic chemicals. May work in areas with mechanical moving parts.
Travel Requirements Limited overnight travel (10%) by land and/or air.
