You will have opportunities to contribute across a spectrum of basic research and applied technologies, working from concept, design and simulation through fabrication and test. On any given day, you may be asked to: Conceptualize, design, fabricate and test additively manufactured devices using tools such as Nanoscribe, FDM, SLS, SLA, aerosol jet, and direct write extrusion printing for use in heterogeneous integration, micro optical devices, electronics packaging, non-planar electronics/power sources and metamaterials. Optimize material systems and process parameters for multi-scale 3D printing Develop and implement syntheses and processes for generating autonomous and environmentally responsive sensors Develop and demonstrate printable devices that integrate multiple functionalities Collaborate across fields with other internal organizations as well as academic and industrial collaborators Publish original research in high impact journals and conference proceedings Support development of proposals for new programs with co-workers as well as contribute to creation of new research ideas Document and deliver results and report findings to co-workers, customers, and the broader scientific community
Qualifications We Require Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or related field and have a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) A record of productivity and innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, professional conference proceedings, presentations and/or issued patents Experience with mechanical design and additive instrumentation, electronics and testing Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance Qualifications We Desire Experience with multiphoton lithography materials and instrumentation Experience in circuit design and prototyping, simulation software, and opto-mechanical design and drawing (e.g., Solidworks) Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as microreplication, embossing, flexography/gravure, screen printing, semiconductor manufacturing, and printed circuit boards Experience with chemical and materials lab practices Experience with materials characterization including optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy Experience with software programming and instrument control Proven communication and interpersonal skills as needed to work successfully in a team environment About Our Team
The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials synthesis strategies and unique processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursor chemistries and surface functional groups, understanding different routes to nano-scale particles and thin films, understanding the rheology of metal-particle inks and ceramic slurries, investigating new catalyst materials and conducting mechanistic studies of catalysis, and investigating the self-assembly of nanoparticles in 2- and 3-dimensions. Processing research and development includes; providing a Direct Write capability that can deliver metal nanoparticle inks to topographically challenging substrates, electrospining of fibers of vastly different compositions, and combining different materials and processing strategies to realize disruptive advances in a variety of application spaces. Our customers include all of Sandia's mission areas and numerous external collaborators. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at local community colleges and UNM, as well as universities throughout the United States.
Our team is committed to nurturing environment compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce. In support of this vision, our center actively recruits applicants from diverse groups of backgrounds and fosters an inclusive community.
Join us and work towards your goals while making a difference!
