What You Will Do
The Strongly Correlated Electron Systems team in the MPA-Quantum group seeks an outstanding scientist to lead the group's efforts in spectroscopic studies of quantum materials. The successful candidate will be a member of a research team that focuses on discovering and understanding new phenomena in quantum materials. Correlated f-electron-based systems are a particular area of emphasis and studies of magnetism, spin fluctuations and electronic structure often play a crucial role in understanding novel states of matter, including (but not limited to) quantum criticality, topological matter, quantum spin systems, heavy fermion physics, low dimensional physics, spin-orbit coupled systems, and other new phases of matter that often emerge at low temperatures. The intention is to hire someone with expertise in elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, but candidates with expertise in X-ray scattering techniques and ARPES will also be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out experiments either in the laboratory or at a user facility that is most appropriate for the desired measurements. The candidate will be expected to contribute to ongoing technical work as well as to develop and prepare proposals for new research initiatives. The candidate should be able to work effectively as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary research group, which includes sample growth, characterization, transport and thermodynamic measurements, NMR, device fabrication, and measurements under extreme conditions (high pressure, high magnetic fields, and low temperature) to explore new physics through new materials.
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Scientist 2 ($94,100-$155,700 )
The successful candidate will:
Perform spectroscopic measurements of quantum materials
Present results at international conferences and in the scientific literature
Develop and prepare proposals to obtain internal and external funding
Collaborate with team members to explore ideas of common interest
Scientist 3 ($113,100-$190,900)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to:
Lead, supervise, and mentor large teams including postdocs and graduate students as appropriate.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated record of technical excellence and achievement in spectroscopic studies of correlated electron materials and phenomena as reflected through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at internationally recognized conferences.
Demonstrated proficiency with a range of spectroscopy techniques (e.g. elastic and inelastic), a record of obtaining beam time at international user facilities, and as applicable, experience with the execution of state-of-the-art spectroscopic measurements at very low temperatures, high magnetic fields and high pressures.
Demonstrated familiarity with relevant theory and appropriate analysis of data.
Excellence in communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated dependability and ability to work independently, creatively, and professionally as part of a team environment.
Demonstrated collaborative research experience (within academia, industry or government agencies).
Ability to establish effective and productive partnerships.
Demonstrated commitment to goals of ensuring the health and safety of workers and the public as well as environmental protection.
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the (higher level title) level requires:
Evidence of successful supervision and mentoring of students and postdoctoral researchers.
Demonstrated leadership ability as evidenced by successful management of scientific projects or teams.
Desired Qualifications:
Understanding of f-electron materials.
Postdoctoral research experience.
Scientist 2 Education Required: Position requires a minimum of a Bachelor' degree in condensed matter phyiscs or equivalent field and 4 years of related experience. A Ph.D is strongly preferred.
Scientist 3 Education Required: Position requires a minimum of a Master's degree in condensed matter physics or equivalent field and 6 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Ph.D is strongly preferred.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
