Assistant (Tenure-Track) or Associate/Full (Tenured) Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE)

Research Focus: Multi-Scale, Multi-Physics Computational Mechanics for Design and Manufacturing

We are seeking applicants with experience and interests in conducting fundamental and applied research in computational mechanics. The ideal candidate will develop and validate novel multi-scale and multi-physics computational mechanics methodologies for simulation of devices, structures, and/or manufacturing processes. Applicants are expected to have expertise and interest in developing computational tools that are broadly applicable. We are seeking applicants with proven research experience in some or all of the following areas:

multi-scale, multi-physics simulation of design, control, monitoring, and optimization of manufacturing processes such as scalable nanomanufacturing, self-assembly, hybrid additive/subtractive techniques, and metal printing. multi-physics, multi-scale simulation of structures and devices in a variety physical domains and/or extreme environments materials selection and optimization for advanced sensors, actuators, and structures using computational- and data science-based methods multi-scale, multi-physics simulation of technologies to produce complex, highly hierarchical multi-scale materials, components, and structures for tunable behaviorsverification and validation of novel numerical simulations in emerging areas through direct or collaborative experimental work

The design, engineering, and manufacture of devices, components, and hierarchical structures is becoming more complex and more interdisciplinary. Computational tools associated with understanding, improvement, and application of ideas and designs need to keep up. This work takes place at multiple length scales and in a variety of physical domains and exists at the interface of mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, materials science, data analytics, and manufacturing technologies. Furthermore, digital twin design methodologies that are rapidly becoming the norm rely on accurate simulations. These dramatic changes from even 5 years ago present challenges for traditional academic design and manufacturing programs, but also present incredible opportunities for innovative academicians. The fundamental nature of computational mechanics, and the emphasis on multi-scale and multi-physics allows for a skilled person in this area to bring together the different research areas.

Applicants are expected to have received a doctorate degree in a relevant engineering or applied science discipline. Successful candidates will develop a vigorous, externally funded research program and maintain a strong, recognized publication record. They will be expected to contribute their leadership and innovative thinking toward promoting excellence in programs within the MAE department, school, and university and in time, to anchor center-type proposals that are home to MAE. They will be expected to facilitate the recruitment and success of students (especially those from underrepresented minorities) pursuing graduate degrees in related programs. Successful candidates will also provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and provide service and leadership within the MAE professional community at large. Applications must include a cover letter, three statements that describe research, teaching, and service interests, respectively, a curriculum vita, up to three key publications, and the names and contact information of at least three (3) references. For applicants to Associate/Full Professor positions, references will not be contacted until later stages of consideration, in consultation with the candidate. A separate statement that addresses the applicant’s past and/or potential contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion must also be included in the application materials.

Applications must be received by January 7th, 2022, to receive full consideration. All positions will remain open until filled. Apply online at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/JPF07213

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidates finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full) positions will be subject to institutional reference checks.

Founded in 1965, the Samueli School of Engineering educates more than 4,600 students with an integrative approach that blends fundamentals, research, and hands-on experience. With a strong presence in all the fields of engineering and with world-class centers such as the Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI) and the Institute for Design and Manufacturing Innovation (IDMI), UCI is uniquely positioned to rapidly assume a major role in advanced design and manufacturing research. The school includes six academic departments, where faculty conduct world-class research around the four broad themes of environmental sustainability, human health, materials and manufacturing, and mobility and communications. Among these four priorities for growth, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine identifies the following: “Lead the new industrial revolution in technology and manufacturing – Develop new materials that sustain and enhance key industrial sectors in California, including aerospace, defense, automotive, energy, health care and micro/nano-electronics. Assist manufacturers in the implementation of additive and smart manufacturing technologies through integrated research, education and industrial engagement.”

The University of California, Irvine (UCI) is part of one of the world’s premier public university systems and is a member of the Association of American Universities. UCI is a Minority Serving Institution (MSI) for both Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander students and Hispanic students, is ranked as a top ten public university by U.S. News and World Report, and was identified by the New York Times as No. 1 among U.S. universities that do the most for low-income students. The UCI campus is located in Orange County, 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 45 miles south of Los Angeles. The City of Irvine is one of the safest communities in the U.S. and offers a pleasant year-round climate, numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, and one of the highest-ranked public school systems in the nation.
