Functional Manager of TPS Material Development – Advanced Development Programs

As Functional Manager of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will cultivate and mange individual’s technical capabilities for various spaceflight systems. You will be responsible for leading the development of cutting-edge materials technologies for thermal protection systems. These materials systems will be used in Blue Origin’s reusable, reentry vehicles. You will lead and manage a group of talented people and you will collaborate across multiple teams and organizations. You will be both an individual contributor to the design and success of these programs, as well as an advocate for the career growth of your direct reports. This is a critical position that plays a key role in success of reusable launch vehicles. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of TPS. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Qualifications: Master’s Degree in materials science and other relevant fields. 2+ years of demonstrated experience managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups, with responsibility for technical quality of work delivered, and career management of employees 10+ years of minimum directly relevant experience in material and process development. Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion. Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum. First-hand, extensive experience in all the following areas: Material and process development from ideation to technology implementation. Managing technically complex and ambitious projects focused on technology transition. Working collaboratively and effectively with other organizations and product managers to deliver impactful products. Collaboration with a range of suppliers, research institutes, and academia to drive and deliver impactful results. Material and process development for refractory metals, ultra-high temperature ceramics and ceramic matrix composites. Establishing complex material manufacturing procedures to obtain repeatable process and reproducible products. Coating materials and processes, characterization, and their degradation mechanisms in different environments. Ultra-high temperature environmental barrier coatings. Knowledgeable in the following areas: Thermo-mechanical evaluation of materials at multi-scale. E.g. macro-scale tensile, compression, fracture toughness, fatigue, micro- and nano-scale instrumented indentation, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, and Thermogravimetric Analysis. Material microstructural and chemical characterization. E.g. Scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, surface profilometry, Electron Backscattered Diffraction, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Non-destructive evaluation of metallic, ceramic and composite materials. Microstructure, properties, performance relations of metallic and non-metallic materials. Structurally embedded health monitoring sensors and application methods. Development of material design values and allowables. Bulk material and coating failure analysis using all the available material characterization tools. Desired: PhD in material science and other relevant fields. 15+ years of directly relevant experience in material and process technology development.
