Postdoctoral Scholar - Aerospace Engineering

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Dr. Namiko Yamamoto is looking for a Postdoctoral Scholar who is familiar with micro-mechanics modeling of hierarchically-structured materials. This project is funded by the NASA’s Physical Science Informatics (PSI) program. The research goal is to advance knowledge about the mechanical properties of cement binder hydrated in the microgravity environment using micromechanics-based modeling, based on the available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and other materials data. As a crucial component to build shelters and habitats on the surface of Moon and Mars using on-site resources, common cement binder was formed in the microgravity environment on the international space station. The postdoc will be using the micromechanics analysis code with generalized method of cells (MAC/GMC) with incorporated crack band model provided by NASA Glenn, to predict the structure-property relationship of these unique cement samples. The successful applicant should have a Ph.D. in engineering or a related discipline prior to hire date.

Required skills: General knowledge about structure-property relationships including nano/micro-structures, porosity, and phases. Capability to use (and if possible program) micromechanics-based modeling and finite element analysis. Basic lab work experiences in material synthesis and characterization.

Merits of this position:
