Position description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) in the College of Engineering of the University of California, Davis invites candidates for an Assistant Professor of Teaching in Biomedical Engineering position.

The Assistant Professor of Teaching series emphasizes excellence in teaching and student-centered efforts, and complements the research-focused Professor series at the University of California. Appointment conveys membership in the Academic Senate and, contingent upon promotion, security of employment that parallels tenure. Professors of Teaching are expected to be outstanding teachers, engage in professional and/or scholarly achievement and activities (i.e. educational scholarship and curricular innovation), and provide service to the department, University, and public.

Applicants must be able to teach core undergraduate courses, and be willing to help evolve an innovative multi-disciplinary curriculum in the field of biomedical engineering. Attractive candidates will have a clear interest in teaching, teaching experience, sound ideas for improving student learning and engagement, and ideas for enhancing the biomedical engineering curricula.

As one of the country’s leading R1 institutions, UC Davis seeks candidates with exceptional potential for and record of professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, teaching, and inclusive excellence. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities in higher education.
Applicants’ track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equal opportunity, and inclusion as well as their plans for future engagement will be a significant part of the overall evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications for a faculty appointment.

Applicants must be awarded a PhD or equivalent in biomedical engineering or related quantitative field by time of hire. Participation in department, college, and university service as a member of UC Davis Division of the Academic Senate is an expectation under our faculty shared governance model.

We desire candidates who demonstrate understanding of issues affecting underserved populations such as (but not limited to) women, underrepresented minorities, individuals self-identifying as LGBTQIA+, veterans, individuals with disabilities, economically disadvantaged groups, first-generation students, undocumented students, or students with any intersections in between. Successful candidates will help advance UC Davis’ strategic goal of improving access and building an inclusive community for all marginalized populations. A successful candidate also will have an accomplished record (calibrated to career stage) of teaching, scholarly activity, or service activities addressing the needs of underrepresented minorities, and a clearly articulated vision of how their work at UC Davis will continue to contribute to the University’s mission of serving the needs of our diverse state and student population.

Application Requirements
For fullest consideration, please review the full position description, which provides guidance on application requirements and recommendations to strengthen your application.

The deadline for full consideration is October 31, 2021, although applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Application packages should be submitted online through UC Recruit and should include the following documents:

cover letter curriculum vitae with list of publications and professional activities; a statement of teaching, including a summary of leadership efforts, and plans/vision for curricular and/or co-curricular initiatives statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at least 3 letters of recommendation signed Authorization to Release Information form (available in the RECRUIT system).

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for assistant professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions will be subject to reference checks.

We encourage applicants to explore the College's and the Department’s websites. We strongly recommend that all candidates visit our recruitment website for additional information about how their application materials - including their Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - will be assessed by the Search Committee in the screening and review process.
