Position description

The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions in: (1) robotics (emphasis on computational aspects of robotics research including robot learning, reasoning, safety, and perception) and/or (2) embedded
system design targeted at robotics and autonomous system applications (emphasis on computational efficiency, lower size, weight and power [SWaP], perception integration, real-time operations, security, and robustness). While the search is mainly focused on an Assistant Professor position, more senior candidates with exceptional records will also be considered.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has 33 core faculty members including 12 Fellows of the IEEE, AAAS, and other professional societies, and 16 NSF CAREER and Young Investigator awardees, plus a number of research, adjunct, and cooperating faculty. The ECE department trains over 200 graduate students and receives annually over $9.6 million in research funding. Research areas in the department include computer engineering, controls and robotics, intelligent systems, smart grids and energy, nano materials and devices, and signal
processing and communications. Multiple ECE faculty collaborate within the campus research centers, including the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIS), the Center for Nanoscale Science & Engineering (CNSE), the Winston Chung Global Energy Center (WCGEC), and the College of Engineering’s Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT).

Successful candidates will have a proven record of, or exceptional promise for, developing a vibrant externally-funded research program, as well as a portfolio of high quality teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and record of publications, teach a regular course load at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to participate in service activities at department, college, campus, and professional levels. They should also demonstrate clear potential for complementing and/or
synergistically leveraging existing research activities within the department, college and campus. Notably, they are expected to support the new cross-cutting robotics efforts undertaken at UCR, for example the new Robotics MS program, the first of its kind within the University of California system.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a closely related field by time of appointment, which is expected to begin on July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input.
