Senior Principal Scientist, Biophysics

Company Description:

Proteovant Therapeutics is a newly launched development-stage biotech company focusing on discovery and development of disease-modifying therapies by harnessing natural protein homeostasis processes. We have recently acquired numerous novel protein degrader programs to a range of targets in discovery and preclinical development via the purchase of Oncopia Therapeutics, Inc., a protein degradation company initially focused on oncology indications. Our lead program(s) in oncology may enter the clinic as early as 2022. In addition to acquisition of these valuable protein degrader programs and a close relationship with Professor Shaomeng Wang and the University of Michigan, Proteovant is building a strong internal drug discovery and development engine. We are combining deep drug hunting expertise with our parent company Roivant's innovative computational platform VantAI to accelerate discovery and development of protein degraders to treat debilitating diseases. Importantly, the company has secured $200M funding from SK Holdings in addition to investment from Roivant Sciences. Proteovant is rapidly expanding its discovery and development teams in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, DMPK, bioinformatics, toxicology and CMC at many levels. Our initial and main R&D organization is located close to major pharmaceutical companies in the Philadelphia area where we are building out our state-of-the-art labs and office space. We also maintain offices in New York City and working remotely is possible for certain positions.

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Reporting to: Head of Molecular Technology

Position Summary:

You will design and execute vital (non-routine) biophysical assays to support early-stage drug discovery programs as well as help to develop and enable technology for identifying novel protein degraders. This work will rely heavily on Surface Plasma Resonance (SPR), but experience with Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC), Nano Differential Scanning Calorimetry (Nano DSC), or Microscale Thermophoresis (MST) will be helpful. Additionally, you will utilize your knowledge and experience in protein production or structural biology to help drive programs forward. Lastly, you will help to build our science-first culture, challenge scientific assumptions, and work as a team to bring new therapeutics to patients.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and execute biophysical and biochemical assays for protein degradation programs Supervise bench biochemists in internal labs and/or at CROs Work closely with cell biologists, chemists and other functional representatives on cross functional drug discovery teams Participate or lead a cross functional team in building a novel platform for discovery of protein degraders Interpret, summarize, and present research findings at internal and external scientific meetings Lead target assessment from external sources: academia and external collaborators

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in biochemistry or biophysics with relevant post-doctoral experience and 5+ or 7+ years of drug discovery experience in biotech and/or pharmaceutical companies Demonstrated scientific and technical leadership in the design, execution, analysis, and interpretation of data to drive drug discovery programs and elucidate mechanism of action Experience in developing and analyzing SPR assays for drug discovery is required and experience running ITC, nano-DSC or MST assays is preferred Knowledge in small molecule protein degradation via proteosome system and deep understanding in the biochemical process, especially protein dynamics of UPS is desired Assay development expertise specifically in protein-degradation related biophysical assays is desired Experience in conducting biochemistry assays and supervising internal and CRO biochemists is desired Strong problem-solving ability in a science-driven organization is a plus Ability to critically analyze and interpret data, and effectively document and communicate results and recommend next steps Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with strong verbal and written communication skills
