The Thermo Fisher Scientific site in Pleasanton, Life Sciences Solutions Group, is seeking an experienced senior automation mechanical/fluidic developer to support high-throughput oligo manufacturing in our BioAutomation Engineering team.
How will you make an impact?
As part of a multi-disciplinary team including product R&D, product management, quality, design and integration and operations, the successful candidate will plan and execute complex engineering projects for new product and equipment introductions that will improve product quality, increase operating performance, and add robust capability and scale to the factory.
What will you do?
Ability to evaluate and test new Bioautomation technologies. For example, experience with laboratory automation robotics, liquid handlers, optical readers, labelers and cappers, analysis tools and standard laboratory devices in a broad range of use areas (micro and nano scale, high density arrays etc...) Write detailed requirements and work with vendor automation houses on proposals for custom automation Ability to lead mechanical project with cross functional team thru to integration into Manufacturing Develop robust manufacturing fluidic methods utilizing Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman, Agilent and like liquid handling platforms. Ability to understand the combination of fluidics and biochemistry/chemistry and mechanics in order to achieve the performance needed in the end product. Evaluate Liquid handling/hardware to integrate off-the-shelf and custom instrumentation into the manufacturing/quality control processes Provide technical leadership on cross functions teams for high-throughput, oligonucleotide operations and R&D applications Create test plans that have stated requirements and specifications. Analyze data and communicate results in a team environment.

Education
Bachelors degree or higher in science or engineering related field
Experience
10+ years’ experience in developing custom automation and fluidic methods 7+ years Management experience is desired, but not required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Strong skills with mechanical design aspects coupled with process engineering knowledge Proficient in Mechanical Design software (Autocad, SolidWorks etc..) Experience in fluidic principles and in testing methodologies for fluidics Experience on Hamilton, Beckman and Tecan Liquid Handlers desired. Experience in several software programming languages such as Visual Basic, Javascript and Labview. Database experience a plus. Strong bench skills and experimental design required Experience working as a member of a process/product development team, developing highly reliable solutions according to specifications and timelines. Comfortable with integrating instrumentation with other systems via COM and file read/write operations Well versed in best practices of software development including architecture, error-handling, intuitive GUI design, documentation and source-code control
