JOB SUMMARY

Battelle's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Business Line is currently seeking candidates for a full time, permanent position as a Proteomics Mass Spectrometrist. This position is located in Columbus, Ohio.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Plan and direct research for projects involving advanced trace biochemical analysis for known and unknown components in biological, environmental, and other complex sample matrices. Design and conduct experiments utilizing a variety of mass spectrometry analysis techniques (for example, LC-MS/MS or LC-HRMS); determine appropriate acceptance criteria, conduct technical data reviews, analyze and interpret data collected, form conclusions, and write/review technical correspondence and technical reports. Troubleshoot complex laboratory problems; provide new perspectives to existing solutions. Contribute to technology development research to improve existing capabilities Develop innovative testing and/or analysis methods to improve results and/or the efficiency of the process. Provide technical direction to and coordinate the efforts of small teams of scientists and technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints. Collaborate across job functions and scientific disciplines to adjust analytical approaches accordingly. Keep abreast of relevant scientific literature and apply this knowledge to the design, modification and implementation of new experiments and methodologies. Prepare and make technical presentations to clients, both formal and informal. Assist with proposal efforts. Prepare technical sections of proposals. Oversee, mentor and train lower-level staff. Other duties as assigned. THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED Minimum requirement of PhD in analytical chemistry or organic chemistry with significant analytical experience with proteomics and mass spectrometry, with 0-3 years of industrial experience or post-doc experience. Strong background in theory and fundamentals of mass spectrometry and ionization methodologies for large and small organic molecules. Extensive experience using mass spectrometry technologies to characterize small molecules, natural products, polymers, or biopolymers. Solid LC-MS background and expertise in proteomics methodologies. Hands-on experience with Quadrupole-Time-of-Flight (QTOF) mass spectrometry, nano-LC fluidics, and data processing with various software. Experience with PRM/SRM and DDA/DIA Proven experience with operation, calibration, and maintenance of MS instruments and interpretation of data. Strong fundamental knowledge of protein chemistry and understanding of biology of genomic alternations with proteomic phenotype. Proficient in standard wet chemistry sample extraction and cleanup techniques. Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to independently design & execute experiments to solve unique problems Experience with large-scale data analysis and bioinformatics. Problem solving skills based on understanding of raw data. Incumbent must successfully pass medical screening, including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) and work with highly hazardous materials Must be US Citizen Incumbent will be subject to a government security investigation and must have the ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED Experience with trace quantitative chemical analysis Experience working with toxic chemicals Experience operating in GLP/GMP/ISO environments Experience with mass spectrometry-based protein identification and analysis software (e.g., Mascot, Progenesis, ProteinPilot, etc. LEGAL DISCLAIMER
