What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated Technologist with a specialty in electronics to work in the Biological and Chemical Sensors Department. The selected candidate will assemble, diagnose issues, test, and perform limited electronic design of hardware systems that interface various types of sensors with real-world applications. The types of sensors range from radiological, acoustic, ion mobility, and optical to other types of custom physical and chemical sensor developed in the department and at Sandia.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Design and assemble circuit boards with both analog and digital capabilities. Tackle problems, using common electronic test equipment, and the lab-built hardware. Test and program microcontrollers to interface the analog signal with common external interfaces. Develop Window’s based applications using C, MATLAB, or another appropriate program to complete the machine-human interface. Operate mechanical/chemical systems to supply calibrated test analytes to the sensors. Perform systematic scientific detailed testing of the sensor and the sensor system. Qualifications We Require Associate's degree in electronics or equivalent combination of education and experience Familiarity with analog systems and circuitry as implemented using operational amplifiers Experience with soldering circuit boards, electronics, and surface mount components Familiarity with electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, meters, etc. Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance Qualifications We Desire Familiarity with standard analog and digital troubleshooting techniques Skilled at interpersonal, oral, and written communications Familiarity with chemical handling Ability to balance and prioritize tasks across multiple projects Proven track record of maintaining a laboratory notebook Familiarity with mechanical design software Familiarity with coding of microcontrollers using C or assembly About Our Team
The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based system for a variety of sensing applications including chemical, biological, and explosives. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia's MESA facility. We also have state-of-the-art microbiology capabilities to aid in biological sensor development.
