Assistant Technician, Advanced Composites Manufacturing

Overview:


We are seeking an entry level Technician who will focus on the manufacture of advanced composites utilizing a variety of techniques, including additive manufacturing. This position resides in the Advanced Composites Manufacturing Group in the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Sciences and Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).




As part of our research team, you will be working to develop novel processing routes for producing advanced composites, including carbon-carbon composites for extreme environments, additively manufactured composites, injection/compression molded composites, filament wound composites and bio-derived composites. This position will involve developing new and novel techniques to produce advanced composites as well as recycling techniques using shredder, granulator, waterjet cutter.




This will involve operating additive manufacturing systems, robotic systems, prepreggers, towpreggers, compression molding systems, melt-extruder equipment, as well as programming furnace controllers, as well as operating high-temperature, high-pressure controlled atmosphere furnaces. You will also be asked to skillfully use software, in concert with additive manufacturing methods to produce preforms for composite materials. Lastly, you will learn to safely handle hazardous materials, and develop experience handling nano-materials.




Major Duties/Responsibilities:


Operate various robotic systems for use in additive manufacturing processes Operate and program oven and furnaces utilized for the processing and conversion of preforms into carbon fibers Conduct characterization of various composites from these processes Maintain various extrusion and processing equipment in good working condition, including coordinating calibrations, and scheduling maintenance and repairs as needed Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications:


Minimum of Associate’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline with at experience operating polymer additive or polymer manufacturing equipment. Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs



Preferred Qualifications:


Experience with extrusion deposition (FFF) additive manufacturing Experience with injection molding Experience with compression molding Experience with filament winding Experience with polymer/composite material processing Experience with polymer/composite material recycling Excellent written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite Knowledge of Solidworks or comparable CAD package


Special Requirements:


This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence).
